Default New guy!

Hello All!
New mid-west member here... I've been lurking around a bit trying to read and learn about these cars... This is a great forum. Lots of good info!!

Let me start by saying that I do not yet have a jag. I have been shopping around and really like the x type styling (and used car pricing) so it's my main focus. I am looking to buy this car for my mother who wants something fancy and needs an automatic trans. She really loves the jag styling as well so it looks like this is the style of car we're getting.

I have a few questions and I'm not sure if this is best posted here or better posted in the model-specific sub-forum.

Basically, looking at a 2003 x type, 2.5 auto... I can get the car pretty cheap because it has a trans issue. Owner says it slips pretty bad, is super slow to engage into first and can only be driven super slowly.... Owner claims it barely drives. Car as 135k miles on it.

I wanted to do some research before driving out to see and maybe buy it. My wife and I are mechanically inclined but have never serviced an automatic trans (we prefer manual). Anyway, wondering if there are more resources or "experts" here that I should be talking to before I buy this car and get myself "in deep".

welcome to the forum, you are in the right place for answers and support. I'd recommend checkoing out the X-type section how-to's as well as asking specific questions regarding the possible issues. Enjoy the forum and good luck in the quest for a jag - post pics when you do make a selection

Welcome to the forum boostmaster,

Follow this link X-Type - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the X-Type section for help, advice and information. It's the section to post your model specific questions. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top there is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

You may also like to visit the US Southern Midwest Region section by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/m...n-mo-oh-wi-39/ to find other members in your region.

Good luck with the deal on the 2003.

Enjoy the forum.

Thanks for the welcome!
I've already posted in the x type section and I think I've already read all the how-to articles in there as well.... (What can I say? I like to be well informed before I buy a car) LOL

I'm currently going through all the old threads pertaining to these auto transmissions... I might be here a while...

And i will definitely post pics if/when I am able to find the right car!

I've posted to your thread in X-Type section. You are going to have to get 'hands on' with this vehicle to have a chance of finding out the cause of the issue.

Hi boostmaster: Welcome to the forum and greetings from the Midwest Region. I know nothing about x-types, but general Jaguar wisdom dictates a) there's no such thing as a 'cheap' Jaguar and b) always get the best one you can for the money.

Good luck!
Scott

Thanks guys for all the info...

I know none of this will be cheap but since I do the bulk of my own work, I can sometimes manage to bite off a little more than others...

As for getting "hands on" - that is entirely my intent. However, I would prefer to try and contemplate all the of the possible "worst-case" scenarios BEFORE purchasing the car (it's location makes thorough inspection near impossible). If I know, for example, that my worst case is $2k in repairs, I am fine with that if I can secure the vehicle for the right price.

If, however, I were to learn that this auto trans issue is such a royal PITA and that it will be a constant source of hair pulling, I may modify my search and look for a different model or even make of car...
