New guy here
Hi guys my name is Jason and I'm new (obviously) I'm here because I am trying to help a friend/ coworker out. His wife just passed away and she owned a 1986 XJ6 Vanden Plas that she promised to her son when he got his driver license. The problem is they are not sure whats wrong with it and the family has no mechanical skill whatsoever when it comes to fixing cars. This is where I come in I work on all my own cars and am pretty knowledgable when it comes to working on them. But I don't know a thing about Jags and I would love to help them out so his son can drive this car sooner than later.
Now here is the problem the car has been sitting for about a year they were driving home one night and the car over heated they pulled over and shut the car off to add some water to the radiator and went to fire it back up but all it did was click as if the starter was bad all the dash lights and everything come on like normal but when you try and start it, it just clicks. Is there a safety mode where if the car overheats it pops a fuse to prevent further damage? or is it possible the engine seized that quickly?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forum Jason,
Good to have you here with us at Jaguar forums. Sad circumstances for you to be involved with but I'm sure it will be greatly appreciated if you can get the car running.
Jaguar engines can be seriously damaged by overheating but seizing is an extreme and rare event. It is probably the battery but removing the plugs and trying to rotate the engine with a socket on the crankshaft pulley will confirm seized or not.
First thing is to identify the model as 1986 was a crossover year.
1. the earlier XJ6 Series III:
2. the later XJ40:
Confusingly, both of these were marketed as 'XJ6' by Jaguar!
Follow this link XJ6 & XJ12 Series I, II & III - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the XJ6 series III forum or this one XJ40 - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the XJ40 forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top of each is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Thank you for the welcome guys I'm glad to be here and am glad to be helping out a friend. I did some searching yesterday and have to say I read a lot of good information here and it was understandable as well. A lot of the forums I've been on and am apart the information is so scattered it's hard to tell what's what.
With the information I read yesterday I kinda already to eliminated some things but am still stuck. I will try to turn the crank and see if it's seized. What would be the best way to remove the hood?

1. enlist the help of a friend - they are surprisingly heavy
2. mark the hinge positions before slackening the fixing bolts to aid alignment on refitting
With care to avoid damaging paintwork, no lifting or support equipment is required.
