Default New to the jag world..ADVICE NEEDED!!!

Hello everyone!! I happened to stumble across a Jaguar XJ6 4.2 L 1980. the body is in pretty good nick the engine starts and idles nicely but doesn't go into gear so I suspect the gear box is stuffed. The guy I got it from was going to get it scrapped and it was such a beautiful car that I offered to have it and the guy gave it to me. I don't know anything about Jags and was just wondering if you guys and gals would be able to give me any advice on whether or not I should keep it and do it up? and is this model jag classified as vintage and what is the going rate for an XJ6 in mint condition? Pretty certain I will be keeping it but just want to make sure that it wont be too much of a money pit. Yours kindly the ignorant Australian. Any input will be good.

Welcome to the forum. For a tech type question such as this, you would be best off posting over in the XJ6/12 section.

You will find some very knowledgeable members over there.

Still sounds like a decent deal 'free', always good.

LOL! This sounds like something I'd do! Welcome to the forum! lol

The people on here are amazing; you'll find lots of info to help you out. I do hope she's not too much of a money pit and that you get to keep her.

The first thing I was told was, find a Certified Jag tech that does jobs on the side. You could look her value up on Kelly Blue Book. Don't know if it applies in Australia; if not, I'm sure there's something like it that does. Sorry I can't really be of any help. Hoping for you that she's a diamond in the rough.

Same year as the car I once had ! I have to say build quality was not a Jaguar strength in that year. However the BW66 gearbox is normally a very rugged unit and I had no trouble at all with mine, (plenty of trouble elsewhere mind you). They can be repaired by specialists, or you can try to find another one. I would post on the Xj 68-87 forum and describe the symptoms in more detail.
