Default New to jags. History of part purveyor.

Hello. I’m scott from Pennsylvania, USA. I’m a professional machinist with a side hobby of rebuilding muscle car engines. However I’ve recently gotten into Jaguars. My daily driver is a red 1998 xj8 vanden plas. I also have a white one with a bad tranny that I intend to put a 1974 v12 into that I’m going to build a custom induction system for. I cut up the 1974 due to poor condition. And I also just acquired a 1976 xj12-L with 35,000 original miles. However it was left in a barn and the underside is rotted away. I intend to simply part it out. Looking for a place to do so is what brought me here. I also hope to learn from all of you as I attempt my custom build.

Your greatest challenge is getting the TCM, PCM and other modules to work if you swap out the AJ-V8 for the V12.

What's wrong with the gearbox in the X308?

It will move at first. But as the tranny starts to warm up it slips more and more. I’ve already checked the fluid and level. They seem to be good. To my understanding these gearboxes have an issue with the forward drum failing. So I assume it’s that at this point. Since getting into these cars it’s dissapointed me that they didn’t put a v12 in the x308’s. So I’d like to fix that. The 1974 v12 is carbureted and I intended to keep it that way. The computers in the x308 I intended to leave in place and powered. I did something similar with a 1991 Chevy caprice I built a custom 327 carbureted motor for. I left it’s computers and wiring in place. Just tied up out of sight. Worked great.

The normally aspirated X308s use the ZF 5HP24 gearbox. Here is a link to the repair manual:

You'll also need to work out a different way to power the fuel pump for the carburetted engine and a way to mate the ZF gearbox and electrical connections.

With these modifications, can the vehicle pass Pennsylvania vehicle inspection and smog test?

Welcome aboard.

Over the last 20+ years I've noticed that many Jag enthusiasts are also muscle car enthusiasts and/or are connected to muscle cars in some way. I myself work on old muscle cars almost every day, which is a lot of fun. Of course, the era when I could afford to own muscle cars is an ancient memory. I got out of that segment for a spell....and then couldn't afford to get back in !

Jags are fun and interesting. Great cars for DIYers and, in the grand scheme of the car hobby word, dirt cheap.

Cheers
DD

I plan on using the the borg Warner model 12 gear box that original to the v-12. As for inspection, I plan on referring the car differently so it will not have to go through emissions. There are various restrictions on driving it at that point but that will be just fine as It’s not a daily driver.
