Hello from Indianapolis! I joined the forum because I'm strongly considering purchasing a used XJ8 or X-Type. I've been looking around at used cars for a little while and I look at the Jags for a while and then I listen to the folks who try to warn me I will get buried by repair costs, then I look at other makes, but I keep coming back to look at the Jags! After reading more info here, I feel better about taking a chance and purchasing one.

I want to spend less than $10K on a car (hopefully less than $8K), and I have seen a lot of 2002-2004, 75,000-90,000 mile Jags in this range. My dad and I have both always loved Jaguars; he's 81 now and never ended up getting one, I'm 45 and I'm starting to think - why not? My favorite is the XJ8 and I was interested but hesitant on an `02 XJ8 with 72,000 for $8995, but now I learned it is sold. I don't like the looks of the S-Type at all, but I'm warming up to the X-Type, as it still has some of the classic lines in the front and the cat on the hood, and it sounds like it would be less expensive to drive, maintain, and repair (or am I wrong here?). I'm good at researching vehicle maintenance and doing what I can myself, but on a Jag, I doubt I would be able to do much more than change fluids, plugs, and filters, cosmetic fixes, or an occasional simple part replacement. I love to wash cars so I guess I will fit in around here!

I am on other vBulletin forums like this, but I've never seen a 10 post requirement to view pics or attachments. I guess I'll have to find more threads to post on.

Welcome, Tim. I wish Jim would quit giving people full member access. My normal suggestion is for people to go to the Girls on Cars thread and post some pics of girls on cars to get their ten posts. Oh well, what can I do? He's the boss.

I love the XJ8 as well. Personally, I think you'd be much happier with the XJ8 than an X-Type. I've looked at a lot of both in the past few months. I keep searching for that killer deal. It seems like the X-types I've looked at have been abused quite a bit more than the XJs. I guess it all has to do with the original and second buyers. The XJs were a lot more expensive, so the buyers were likely to be more mature and they took better care of their cars. The X-Types, on the other hand, were the cheapest cars in the Jag lineup. I'm amazed the the price difference for used XJs and X-Types of the same model year is so small. If you see an XJ8-L for sale you should go take a look at it. The back seat has enough leg room for an NBA player. The L's have a longer wheelbase.

Thanks guys! I'm leaning back more toward the XJ8 now. I see a real nice `02 VP in Chicago: Cars for Sale: 2002 Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas in Villa Park, IL 60181: Sedan Details - 303664721 - AutoTrader.com

If you want a Jag, buy an XJ, if you want a Ford Mondeo, buy an X-type.

Seriously though, big difference between the two. You can find a solid one in the price range you're looking at, it'll be worth the wait.
