Hello all,
I don't at the moment own a Jaguar. I live in Scotland and the reason for joining the forum is to gain some knowledge on the brand as a whole.
If/when I purchase a Jaguar it will probably be a late X250 or X260.
I have been trying to get up to speed with driver/owners of the aforementioned models on other sites and on the whole (aside from catastrophic failures) the brand appears to be
just as good/bad as other premium brands.
I have owned mainly BMW and Mercedes and they are not without issues either. My main failure on those brands was a gearbox failure on BMW 520D (2013) which I believe is the same box on the X250 (Don't know about the x260). On that occasion the box was covered under BMW warranty and was duly replaced (couldn't get any answers at the time as to why it failed but hey ho, it was made good regardless).
What I seem to find through various sites is the X250 crankshaft failing on the V6 and the timing chain failing on early X260 Ingenium engines.
In Jaguars favour there still appear to be a lot of early X250 V6 models still for sale which paints a rather good picture in my eyes. Could this problem be how they are treated and looked after ?
On the other hand the X260 timing chain snapping issue lies firmly at the door of JLR as I believe they realised this and decided to redesign/upgrade the chain and relevant components to a "far better" standard around 2019

I look forward to further reading of the many posts on the site and when I make/if I make the purchase I will update all.

Many Thanks.

Welcome to the Forums.

A 2nd hand car is ONLY as good as the person previously caring for it.

Log book servicing records are critical, but its the "little" things that have me walk away often. Call it Gut Feeling, or something, care is needed with these later beasts.

Good luck.

UPDATE :

So I am now the proud owner of a late x250 Premium Luxury 3.0D

I had to travel down to Birmingham to collect it from a gentleman who works for Jaguar in Coventry and fed me with a wealth of information about both the car I purchased from him (he also had another XF which is garaged during the winter, an XF XFR-S which is absolutely stunning) and some history about the truths and not so truths hovering around the internet and on forums about the "faults" with certain engines and how to avoid "said faults" with consistent maintenance. Needless to say my purchase has been serviced every 5000 miles with his "recommended" Millers 5w30 C1 oil. Timing belt and water pump replaced 2 years ago and the underside of the car has been treated with Lanoguard every 2 years.
