New member intro - 2001 Daimler XJ8 4.0 - Manchester, UK
Hi everyone
My father’s unwell and unlikely to improve so I’m taking care of his XJ8 car as it’ll barely do any miles otherwise. Lord knows why he bought a long wheelbase version!
Mercedes is where my heart is (don’t ban me!). For my next car I had my heart set on a late 90s Mercedes 124 cabriolet, but driving the XJ8 is really making me question that wisdom.
I may be wrong but I think it’s the same model (minus a handbag hook) and same colours as the one that the late Queen briefly used to travel around Windsor.
Jaguar’s interiors have an often noted opulence that is lacking in the equivalent German cars. They have a touch of the romance of the railways about them, I mean hell, XJ8 dashboard looks like it has a whole railway sleeper of walnut in it!
Interiors and creature comforts are where it’s at for me and it’s fair to say the Jaguar’s interior sits between the Germans and Bentley. The piped leather, the impractically light hides, the deep carpets that feel as good as Wilton… it’s really quite special.
The lack of dual temperature zones is a bit odd for a car of this level and the controls aren’t as straightforward as Mercedes. I had to consult the handbook to learn there was yet another cruise control button besides the three on the wheel! The driving position is a bit like sitting in bed but I’m getting over that too.
Driving around to the shops today, people were staring and everyone was giving way to me. I’ve not had that since I drove a new S class Mercedes that was polished to high heaven.
As Bill on YouTube’s curiouscars review channel says, Mercedes and BMW are unfairly advantaged by their previous build quality and Jaguar is unfair disadvantages for theirs.
Dad still has a full set of handbooks but I’ve also been able to download a full set of PDFs backups here today so thought I ought to join this forum to thank the people in that thread.
Hopefully a top up of deionised water will placate the intermittent low coolant level warning and a litre of strong screenwash concentrate and a do with some glass cutter will resolve the smeary windscreen.
Warm regards,
Paul

Welcome to the forums Paul,
Good to have you with us. I had a black Jaguar Sovereign LWB of the same year. LWB is uncommon in the UK and Daimler variant makes it even rarer.
