Default New member looking for advice on X-type first car

Hello, this is my first post on the forum. I'm looking for my first car (22yo) and have come across a beautiful 07 X-type S. The car has had 3 previous owners: the wife of a jaguar dealership director, an old couple and then a mechanic at a jag dealership. Less than 80000 miles on the clock and full spotless service history. A modified crank-damper pulley kit has been recently fitted and the air conditioning rehauled with new hose and re-gas by jaguar. Last year it had a new battery, rear shocks and drop links. The vehicle has just passed an MOT with no advisories.

This car is within my price range (originally looking at VW golf's) and affordable to insure. I have always loved the car as it reminds me of my late uncle who's similar model was unfortunately scrapped last year when the estate was settled.

Would this be a suitable first car for a sensible driver?

Thank you for any responses

Welcome to the forum Olli,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

The PO's appear to be those most likely to have maintained it correctly and the mileage is low, although that is not always necessarily a good thing. A twelve year old vehicle is going to need more attention than it's modern equivalent and you should give careful thought about who will do this. Specialist labour is not cheap and the least painful path to Jaguar ownership is a DIY approach. If you choose this method, very little defeats our X-Type members so there is plenty of advice available. I started Jaguar ownership at a younger age than you and have owned some wonderful cars and marvelous memories. I must add there have also been a few dogs along the way!

I'd say NO! As GGG said earlier, unless you have deep pockets to pay a Jaguar specialist or the dealership, then it's going to be VERY expensive to keep this car running. Also, a "first car" to me means: let see how fast it can go, and how big of a stereo can I stuff in the dashboard. Both of those things can add up to alot of time and money spent to rectify what was not done right or what broke.

I bought my X-Type from a teenager (his first car), and everything that went wrong with the car was out of his price range to fix. As a result, the seatbelt had a knot tied in it because it wouldn't retract, the front bumper was held on with zip ties after a minor fender bender, the steering wheel wobbled because he didn't have tools to fix it, etc..

I'm far from rich, but I've owned hundreds of cars, and can say with certainty that the best ones to own were the ones that were easiest to work on. For example, I recently bought a 1979 MG Midget. It's one of the easiest cars to work on and keep running because there are no computers, electric gadgets, or complex systems. In addition, parts are common and very inexpensive. The best part is that it's very fun to drive, and never fails to put a smile on your face.
