Default New Member- Looking to purchase an XKR Cab!

Hello All,

A little background first, in 2004 my father purchased a 2003 Jaguar S Type (4.0), which was basically brand new. We had few minor issues with the car during its ownership (Control arms, ignition coils, rough idle, etc). But then, the most unfortunate thing happend in 2013: while casually driving the car started violently making a knocking noise. The noise got louder as we accelerated. What we understood was that the car developed a rod knock. The car only had about 110,000 kilometers on it at the time and we ended up selling the car for parts as a new motor cost as much as a used S-type at the time.

Since then my father has had various cars/suvs but never a Jaguar again as the s-type left him with a bad taste for the brand. However, my father has routinely mentioned that he enjoyed the ride of his Jag. Now in 2019, I am noticing that the prices of Jaguar XKR (cabriolets) are quite reasonable and could potentially make a great summer vehicle for my father (and possibly me) to enjoy. The exterior styling, the classy interior and a powerful supercharged motor all are Pro's in my opinion.

I am however, very nervous. My research indicates that the motors in the XKR are similar to those in the S-type (AJ V8).The few cars I have looked at now are 2 or 3 owners in and they are not certain of the repairs that were possibly undertaken by previous owners. Moreover, most cars are about 1-4 hours away and I am not able to take a mechanic with me or have them attend a local specialist. The cars however do drive perfectly fine (no check engine lights, regularly maintained, ie. oil, etc.) but are about 100,000 kilometer (60k Miles) give or take, which is around the time our S-type motor gave out. The cars are inexpensive (IMO for what you get) $10-15k but if the motor goes, it will be another very expensive paperweight!

I am not a mechanic by any means and have only a basic knowledge of cars. So I am appealing to the forum experts to guide me on what to look out for when purchasing an XKR Cabriolet and what are some immediate preventative maintenance matters that should be undertaken. Any tips, guides, etc. will be much appreciated. I look forward to being an active member of this forum.

I should be more specific, I am looking at a few 2001-2002 Jaguar XKR models.

So far what ive noted is: tensioner issues and hydraulic top hose issues as the major complaints. Both unfortunately cannot be assessed without removing major components of the car (engine parts, interior panels).

Hello,
I wish you success in your search for the Perfect XKR.
Doubtless there's one out there, you only need to find it.

Welcome to the Forums.

I suggest a good long read of the XK8 (X100) Tech Section, where all your questions will have answers.

God luck.
