Hi everyone, I'm back to owning a cat after a 15 year absence, a 1985 XJ6 Vanden Plas I found on FB marketplace in KY . I had missed a PRISTINE 87 on the Copart site after hitting my brokers bid limit of 4k, now a dealer has it on Ebay for 14k !! Would have been nice to have that one with "age" being the only issue to deal with. The one I finally purchased was listed as "runs & drives great", NOT, but the seller had gotten stuck with it and didn't know Jags so I'm not mad, just got alot of work to do. Besides salt corrosion on the suspension ( fixable but still a pain ), the side markers didn't work, the bonnet, boot, sunroof, and doors need alignment ( from repaint ? ) as well as being soggy inside from the sunroof problem ( and being parked on a steep uphill driveway didn't help ). The shame is the newish paint is really beautiful but they didn't fix the windshield rust, just sanded and painted over ( now bubbling ). Quick, no attention to detail and not taking pride in work, which is also what caused the light issues; cut / spliced wires with NON water tight crimp connectors and lost / didn't replace lense gaskets ( corroded up completely as well as blown fuses ). Oh and did I mention the fender leapers got put on backwards, REALLY ??? Like how do you miss that ? It's still worth saving but I'm sure I will be underwater money wise even doing all the work myself. I had owned a 1985 XJ6 Sovereign for a number of years ( rebuilt the engine, suspension, and all seals etc ) so I knew they can be "hungry" for TLC & $$$. I still kick myself for letting that first one go. It's going to be loads of work, but I'll get my feral cat nursed back to health. I have always thought they are one of the most beautiful & stylish cars ever made.

Brian

Sounds like good coupla days work, and a few beers should see results.

Welcome to the forum Brian,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

I can see you've already found your way to the XJ6 & XJ12 Series I, II & III forum so there's no need for a link to it from me. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Please add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also visit the US Lower Atlantic Region forum by following this link

Good luck with your project and enjoy the forums.

Graham

Welcome aboard Brian. Sounds like you are starting a project similar to mine; 1985 XJ6 sedan that I am building a Chevy LT1 engine to swap for the original 6 cylinder. Misery loves company.
Merry Christmas, 2 below zero here this morning.
