New member with an XJ6
Hi to anyone that reads this,
Long-time lover of Jaguars, well ever since I went for a ride in a 1968 XJ6 at the tender age of 14!
Now after owning a couple of diesel X types I have taken the plunge and bought a 2012 XJ6 3ltr diesel. Lovely car to drive and it certainly looks stunning inside and out, but I think it is a badly designed car from the point of view of electrical power consumption management. After only one day of owning it, a 'Low Battery' warning light has come up on the dash!
I am beginning to think that my years of trouble-free motoring with my X types is well and truly over!
What I found comical was the recommendation on the dash to start the engine thereby exacerbating the problem because as almost everyone knows cranking an engine uses lots of Amps draining yet more power from that one single 12volt battery.
Why on earth didn't Jag (TATA) install an auxilliary battery for all the electrical and electronics bits and pieces, leaving the main battery free to just crank the engine!
Something else that surprised me was the almost mandatory instruction to check the engine oil level weekly. Neither of my X types ever burnt a drop of engine oil between services, but it would appear that these new Jaguars do!
I am beginning to think that I should have bought the previous model XJ X350 with the 2.7ltr Lion engine, less electronic bit and bobs, and hence better electrical consumption management.
Oh yes, can I ask for a recommendation on the best type of engine oil for a 2012 XJ6 twin-turbo diesel, because there are a lot of different oils out there!
Regards

Welcome to the forums jagtwit,
If the battery monitoring issue is an annoyance, the only solution is to buy a CTEK or get rid of the car. As for checking the oil level weekly, this same advice has been in the Jaguar Owner's Handbook for every one I've owned in more than fifty years although I've never had to top up between services.
Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xj-x351-53/ to the X351 forum for help, advice and information. You can also use the UK & Eire Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/uk-eire-68/ to find other members in your region.
Please read the guidance for new members ( https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...ned-up-241802/ ) which answers many of the most frequent questions about getting started.
Enjoy the forums.

This CTEK seems to be mentioned often, but you didn't mention a model name or number Graham!
Which particular one would you recommend?
Getting back to engine oil, which makes would you recommend for the XJ 3ltr diesel?
Thank you for your assistance.

Hi Gyro,
Thanks! I did join a Jag forum years ago when I bought my 1st X type, but as I never experienced any problem I didn't really use the forum.
Things are different now as I have bought a much more complex car, a 3ltr twin turbo Jaguar XJ6 Portfolio.
Lovely looking car and it drives very well, but I suspect that my years of trouble-free motoring are over!

Indeed we do Gyro, so you'll probably see me here often asking stupid questions of people that know far more about car mechanics than I ever will!

Hi Graham, Thank you for replying! So are you saying that although it asks you to check your oil level weekly, you almost never have to top it up? With my X types I regularly (but not weekly) checked all fluids, but hardly ever had to top up anything, apart from the screenwash!

The CTEK most of us use is MXS 5.0. Shop around because there's usually good savings to be found on list price. The standard product from any CTEX agent is perfect - no need to pay the outrageous loading for a branded equivalent from Jaguar.
With engine oil it's the SPECIFICATION that's important rather than the BRAND. Jaguar recommend Castrol which I've always used but any alternative premium brand to the same specification is equally suitable. The only X351 Owner's Handbook I have available in 2010 and it shows 5W-30 engine oil meeting Jaguar specification WSS M2C934-B for the diesel engine but check this as it may have been updated. I've been using Opie Oils recently because the discounts have been good:

Thanks sklimii,
It is very comforting to know that there are so many lads and lasses that can help out!
I have never been much of a mechanic, but I do at least know roughly how it all works. My engineering skill is in electronics.
