My husband won't 'do' online stuff, so I've joined on his behalf.
We have a beautiful xj8 exec sitting outside our house in sunny Spain. It hasn't moved in months due to a problem with the gearbox, or at least that's what the digital display is telling us. We had some work done on it by a 'reputable' local mechanic and the problem started shortly after this. We can't find anyone else willing to have a look, so it looks like it's going to be sat outside waiting for a while longer.

Welcome.

What year is the XJ8?

The earlier years 1997 to 2003 did have atrans internal issue.

Mostly these can be kept alive with fluid changes every 4 years or so. My nieghbours is at 273000kms, and still original. He changes the trans fluid every 2 years.

A quick repost in the X308 section will have answers coming your way, and there a heaps of interesting tips etc in the "stickies" at the top of that section.

Welcome (back) to the forum Jannxj8,

Has the XJ8 been sitting outside since you joined the forum in 2014 or is this a new problem?

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...member-115468/

Last time it was a suspect alternator and these cars are very sensitive to battery condition. Many weird faults can either come up in the display or as DTC's (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) if the battery is not kept fully charged. Definitely one possible cause to eliminate before moving on to more complex and costly possibilities.
