Default New owner of a XKR

Greetings!

I have just acquired a lovely 2004 XKR convertible that is in pristine condition with extremely low miles. I have been reading the forums for a number of weeks and have learned much from them to help prepare me for a confident purchase.

Now that I actually have the car in my possession, I am (almost) petrified that I may screw something up so I'm proceeding with caution as I learn the fine points of proper stewardship.

There are a couple of small issues at this point; a slight chirp when shifting into 3rd, and a slight weeping under the oil cooler. Nothing much .. just a couple of drops. I've been alerted by the former owner of these two issues so I am keeping a close eye and ear on them.

I'm looking forward to contributing to this forum one day, and in the meantime, I'm all ears.

Welcome.

I would sort the "issues" before they fester into something sinister.

NOT familiar with that particular model, BUT,

An oil drip is more than likely a $2 o/ring.
The "chirp" could be anything, but a trans fluid change would be my 1st go to, then work up drom there.

Ha! good advice, Grant. The former owner suggested exactly what you stated. If th eweep continues, I will try new O-rings. And, perhaps a transmission flush with fresh fluid will agree with the ZF.

Regards,

Gary

Welcome to the forum verdeo,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

My approach to the transmission would be exactly the same as Grant has already suggested. As for the oil leak, these engines are notable for NOT leaking. It could simply be an O ring or a loose hose connections. However, the oil cooler is low at the front and prone to physical damage from careless parking.

It sounds like you've already found your way to the XK8/XKR forum so there's no need for a link to it from me.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome! 1 of 19, Jackson is a far suburb (30 miles) north of MIlwaukee, south of West Bend.

GGG, thanks for the advice, although the car has only 15,000 pampered miles with no evidence of kissing a curb. I think your o-ring suggestion will be where I start, although after the car being driven a few days in a row, it seems to be only one drop in the past 24 hours.

As far as transmission flush, I have heard there is a way with proper equipment, to power flush all of the fluid before filling with new. Can anyone confirm that?
Thanks,
Gary

Gary,

We had a forum visit to a transmission specialist in Glasgow (Mackie Automatic Transmissions Ltd) and saw this procedure being carried out.

The old fluid is drained and the system flushed with new fluid until clean before filling to correct level. The advantage of this is it flushes the torque convertor which 'drain and fill' alone cannot do.

There must be similar facilities in the US.

Thanks, Graham,

It is great news. It seems like the proper way to replenish the fluid. Did they have to go through an engine running procedure during this process too? I suspect they would have at some point to ensure it is properly filled.

I must find someone that can do this in the Midwest. Perhaps the Chicago area.

YES - although it was a Jaguar Forums visit, the model on their lift on the day happened to be an Audi!

The procedure was a drain, flush, fill and run up to temperature whilst monitoring with a scan tool.

Several UK members have used this service since the meeting with nothing but good reports.

I recall them explaining the process was developed in the US so you have to be able to find an equivalent in your region.
