New (sort of) Jaguar XJ8 (X308) in Texas
Hello to the Forums. I'm a second-time Jaguar owner from Texas (Houston area). My first Jag was a '93 XJ40 that I bought sometime around 2001, IIRC. It was my 2nd car at the time, before marriage and kids; not really a daily driver but I probably put about 10,000 miles on it over a 4-5 year period before it broke down in 2005...on the Cross Bronx Expwy in NYC. Any of you familiar with that stretch of road can probably empathize with how much fun that day turned out to be. The fix (electrical) would have been a few thousand $, and w/ a new family that wasn't a great option.
Fast forward about 14 years and the kids are older. I have been driving either a Saturn SL1 (now gone after about 150k miles), Toyota Sienna or Hyundai Tucson for lo, these many years. Great, reliable cars, all of them--but they're not Jaguars. We have the resources for a 3rd car and I finally purchased another Jaguar, this time an '01 XJ308 w/ 57k miles. I'm looking forward to (re)learning as much as possible about these great cars. I'm not sure I like the styling of the newer Jags, but I haven't seen one up close so I'll leave myself open to being won over.
I've seen some posts with suggestions about what should be checked out. My initial plan after bringing home the car today is to make an appointment for a multi-point inspection at our (thankfully very close-by) Jag dealership. I'll ask about the fuel pump and tensioner (?) as the consensus seems to indicate those could be a problem for me. If you have any other suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate them!

Welcome to the forums Craig,
Good to have you with us.
It could get very expensive if you let your Jaguar Dealership loose on a tensioner change. As few dealers have much experience of this, they could be on a learning curve at your expense.
It sounds like you've already found the relevant model forum but if not, follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xj-xj8-xjr-x308-27/ to the X308 forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.
