Newbie checking in
I found a 1986 Jaguar XJ6 Vanden Plas with 155,000 miles for my 16 year old son to drive to school. It looks awesome on the outside but needs a lot of work. One main reason I purchased this car was to give my son opportunities to learn how to make repairs and maintain a vehicle. Its a great 'bonding' car and we have had a great time working on it the last few weeks. He has gained a deep appreciation for WD-40, and is gaining more confidence and mechanical aptitude as we go.

Yeah Fraser, that's for sure! This is a great opportunity/excuse for my son to build up a decent set of tools. I took him to a pawn shop the other day and we spent three hours milling through bins until he had a full set of sockets. I gave him a tool box and a few basic tools to get him started.
We got a good start on the repairs last weekend. We replaced the power window motors on two doors, cleaned and reconditioned the regulators and switches. We replaced the plastic lining and repaired the electric door locks.
We taped the windows up with some cheap duct tape while we were sorting things out. It got pretty hot outside, and the tape left a big sticky mess on the windows. My son was flipping out about not being able to get the adhesive off, so I showed him a new use for WD-40. It took the adhesive off almost instantly. I could tell he was impressed.

Welcome to the forum Jay,
I think you will have lot's pf bonding time with your son!
Seriously though, I think it is an excellent idea and he will appreciate the car all the more when he has helped to do all the work himself.

Welcome Jay!! I couldn't agree with norri above. I throughly enjoyed what my father had taught me about mechanics growing up! Even though he has passed everytime I pick up a wrench or such it reminds me fondly of my dad!
Enjoy your time with your son!
