Hello all. My name is Bruce and I live in Denver, CO.
My journey actually began in June of 1983. I was asked by a family friend to fly to Minneapolis and pick up his new XJ6 and drive it to Denver. Being exactly 21 years old, who in their right mind would say no to such an offer. What an amazing car. To this day, it was the longest solo trip I have ever driven and by far the shortest. I just wanted to keep driving. From that day on I have always loved Jaguars.
Fast forward all the way to 2011, when I bought a 1999 XJ8L with 99k on it. It was a great car, a tad unreliable, but never stranded me. Since I do all of my own work, costs are not a big deal. One of my friends talked me out of the car and I've regretted it ever since.
Fast forward again to September 5, 2016. While trolling the CL ads, I found a 1997 XJ6 with 132k miles. Since the owner was asking a whopping $300(!) I had to call. A nice gentleman spoke to me on the phone about the car. He had inherited a near new car from a relative and stopped driving the Jag months earlier. It had a misfire and the paint was in bad shape (bad clear coat). He said I could have it for $200. I went right over.
After looking the car over, I decided to rescue it. If it turned out to be a total turd I could still part it. The wheels and tires alone were worth $500. So I returned the next day and took it home.
Today I gave it a complete once-over. The underside was dry. Engine bay was clean. The paint is terrible, but zero rust or dents anywhere. In less than 3 hours, I had the interior looking showroom new. I was amazed. Everything in the car works, right down to the rear defroster. Maintained by the dealer since new. Ironically, it's exactly the same color combination as the one I drove back in 1983- Sapphire blue with biscuit interior.
I diagnosed the misfire to the number four cylinder. I will get to that this weekend...
Anyway, glad to be back. Can't wait to make it perfect again...

Just a quick update- I replaced the coils and refurbed the valve cover. It's been running great for the last couple of months. If all turns out ok I plan to paint it next summer...
WOW!! 200 Bux for a car that RUNS!? And has no dents? Or rust? And doesn't leave an oil slick everywhere? And has a good interior? And everything WORKS?! Congratulations!
Thanks! I feel pretty lucky whenever I drive it. I know it will probably need a few things in the future, but the price of admission was low enough that I can justify almost anything. I'm amazed how quiet the interior is. Very tight and free of rattles at 132k miles...
I found the X300 to be the most reliable of the recent Jaguar models. I put 120k miles on my 1996 and only traded it against a 2001 X308 for something different.
Don't let your friends talk you into parting with this one!
