The Perfect XJ
Hey folks,
New guy here from Baltimore, Ontario, Canada (yes there is such a place).
I've been admiring XJs from afar for about 5 years. It took a while, but I think I have finally decided to get a series I car. I have owned a couple of classics in the past, and several modern Japanese cars more recently. Time to get back into the classic end of the spectrum for me.
Great forum... I've been lurking here for a month and learning about XJs. I decided to register today because tomorrow I am going to see another car, and I think it MIGHT BE THE ONE! Wish me luck.

Hope the car you are going to look at is the right XJ Series 1 for you ! The Series 1 is very special as it is the original car as styled by Sir William Lyons. This particular style only disappeared with the XJ 0f 2010 (MY 2011 in the US), so was what most people thought a Jaguar looked like for over 40 years
There may be a lot of things to fix, though, even if the previous owner has been reasonably diligent.

Well, I thought it was the right car for a couple of days... then I discussed the car with a local Jaguar fanatic. He explained that the rust in the rear door shuts was terminal, and that he had actually checked out the car when it was for sale by the previous owner.
So... I'm disappointed that it was not THE ONE, but glad that I averted a lemon.
Real shame because the car looked good with the doors closed, and it was an early '70 model year, before the light surrounds had vents in them.
Oh well... now I am emailing a guy in norther Ontario about his '71... Newly installed motor and the tranny is good. It needs interior and a gas tank and the paint is looking tired. Reportedly no serious rust, but I will be checking very carefully!
Cheers

OK, so I was looking for a S1, but I found an excellent S3 10 minutes drive from home!
It is an '84 with 130k, selling for $4k.
The bad news... it drives pretty good, but not as perfect as a Jag should.
The good news
I am getting is safetied on Thursday.

- Suspect it needs front bushing in suspension mounts or maybe ball joints
- has a leaking cam cover
The good news
- Excellent paint
- Two owners, full service history
I am getting is safetied on Thursday.
