Hi all, I signed up months ago and have been perusing, time to hop in. Long been a fan of Jaguar styling and have finally gotten my hands on one. Its going to be more of a project than expected so I got impatient and bought another. The first is a '72 XJ6. She has sat since the 90's. Upon bringing it home a great friend helped me and we got it to fire on some fresh gas briefly. The reality is everything needs overhauled and the floorboards are virtually gone. This car needs work beyond what my garage (and probably skills) can currently support. She'll sit for awhile until the right time.
Then I went out and snagged an S-Type R for more immediate gratification. Man does this thing rip. I'm still learning her quirks and planning the big things such as trans fluid flush and coolant hoses as some symptoms are present. The forum gave me an accurate idea of what to expect.
Before this I've messed with a handful of things, mostly GM. I've cobbled together a few engines successfully and swapped them, done some suspension work, I've recently tried body work on my one truck and have limited fabrication skills. New to Jags, but not to vehicles.
Welcome to the forum! That was a quick edition of Jaguar math! I mean, it inevitably happens to the best of us, just not quite that quick 😂
Those are both beauties for sure. There has long since been a contentious debate on flushing, even just changing transmission fluid. Curious what prompts that potential action on your S-type?
The forum stickies for S-Types help me anticipate that two of the common issues are coolant hoses and transmission fluid. More specifics on this S-Type are that it is an '03 with 85k miles. It has two known owners and some documented maintenance which does not include any attention to the above.
On the test drive I noticed some funky 1-2 shifts and slight surging cruising between 40-50 mph. I got it out of those ranges with the manual shift. After engine was up to temp there was a coolant smell however no noticeable leaks. After owning for a few weeks and a few hundred miles I did just get the low coolant light after some joyful driving telling me it's going somewhere.
These issues did help me negotiate price more in my favor, I feel I got a lot of car for the money and the engine runs amazing; all the horses are accounted for. I'd rather have an XJR for the looks but prices near me for worse shape cars with twice the mileage are asking double what I paid.
