Default Squeak from windshield frame

I just purchased a 2000 XK8 convertible. There is a loud squeak (sounds like metal on metal) from the windshield frame driver' side caused by road vibration. What is behind the cloth liner that would rub and cause a squeak?

From one Steve to another - welcome to the forum - recommend you look at the upper shock mounts - the foam deteriorates over time leading to metal to metal contact which is transferred across a strut brace - see pics from my XK8. This is a DIY repair if your so inclined - recommend using the Welsh poly upper mounts vice OEM. Also recommend looking at the rest of the suspension and make all repairs at once. Feel free to reach out to me or the others in the XK8/R section for advice https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk8-xkr-x100-17/

Here are some links to threads from my upper shock mount woes - you can see what to look for:

Hello, Steve,
Congratulations on your new Jaguar convertible!
I don't think there's anything more annoying than a squeak. I hope you can find and fix the cause, so you can DRIVE THE WHEELS off with pleasure.

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

When I bought my 2005 XKR it had a creaking noise from what sounded like the dash area, it took ages to find and all it was was the hood locking mechanism in the top tail. I just lubricated and grease the sliding bars and it was cured.
i hope yours is as simple!

Steve,
Thanks a bunch for your recommendation. You were spot on! Repairs made, a bit more extensive to the front suspension system that I anticipated, but now I have a silent ride! Almost too much fun to drive down here this time of year in the Cajun State!
