XJS Convertible
Hi everyone.I am a new member today but I have had my XJS convertible for four years.I bought it on Ebay in California.
I had an almost identical XJS convertible way back in 1991.Red with beige leather. This current car is Red with black leather.Black leather is infinately more suitable for an old car enthusiast .
I was lucky to find this one owner low mileage [30.000] car in excellent condition. As I live in France now I have had to get it through type approval. Not something that I would care to repeat.
I won't bore you with the two years of misery dealing with french officialdom.I have a couple of issues outstanding with the car and I am sure that someone will have all the answers.
I collected the car off the boat in Le Havre, and after 120 Kms the speedo packed up.I eventually realised that there was no cable involved and that it is electronic. How do I locate the problem part ?
There is a sender on the diff,a wire between, and the speedo "head".I find the proper factory workshop manual very difficult to follow.
The second problem is bleeding the brakes.Today I tried to do it exactly as explained in the manual but with no sucess at all.The car is 1991 and to californian specification in most respects.
I intend to try tomorrow with my ezibleed with the ignition on.Trying today to bleed the rear calipers with the nipples only 3/4 of an inch away from a hot exhaust pipe was most unpleasant, especially with the engine running and the gearbox in neutral as demanded by the manual.
Any help would be gratefully received, john.

I have it seems introduced myself in the wrong place ! I hope this is now the right place. My name is John and I have been restoring old "Blue" cars for over 35 years.I have had three XJS in total. My first ,bought from a dealer near Wallington for £3250 quite a few years ago,was an old dog of a car ,but I was very much impressed. So much so,that when I sold my first Bugatti T37 to a Belgian customer,I went straight to the Jaguar dealer in Croydon and bought a 9 month old Convertible. This was sold after three years after giving total satisfaction.I never thought to have another as most cars in the UK would by now be too rusty and troublesome.I work all day on old racing cars and have no great enthusiasm to work on my "modern".I then found in California my current car,a 1991 convertible. This is the same colour as my first convertible but with more sensible black leather rather than the beige of the first one.For those interested in numbers the chassis number is SAJNW 4843LC171302.I have had to apply for a certificate of conformity here in France, which took two years and much grief. I have always very much admired Jaguars cars and the superb engineering.I have a modest collection of Jaguar engines here,including,3.4 curly port,3.8 "D" Type [ photos on request ] and 4.2.The 4.2 is my least favorite because of the compromises made in its construction.I perfer the combustion chambers to be exactly over the relevant bores ! The first convertible had a far better gearchange which encouraged use of the box more in the style of a manual. This current car has a terrible change which definately discourages anything but top gear use.Was this done for the California market ? Thats all for now,I have to go and remove an MG
engine which has a broken conrod.J.

John,
You were in the right place after I'd moved your original post so I've merged your two Intro threads together.
Follow the links in post #2 to your brake bleeding thread, the main XJS tech forum and the Europe Region forum.
I'll look out for a red XJS as I travel the the A10 to Spain and back in June. Jaguars are a rare sight as I cross France although I did see a blue XKR in Saumur at Christmas.
