xk8 vvti camshaft,drive gear
Hello from san diego,i have a xk8 with jumped timing chain courtesy of cracked tensioner.im seeking best options or sources for chain kits, headsets and especially the o rings for the vvti drive gear.
Welcome to the forums hallidaysean,
I presume you've done a full damage assessment to ensure the engine is definitely repairable? Best check ALL parts are available before commencing to spend as the Jaguar spares situation has not been good since the pandemic.
Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk8-xkr-x100-17/ to the XK8/XKR forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues. welcome to the forum - check the forum sponsors - SNG Barratts, jagbits, Coventry West for parts. SNG Barratts has an illustrated parts break down which helps immensely and price shop once you have a list of materials. Some things can be found on Rock Auto as well. Good luck with the repair (had the same thing happen to me a few years back)
I'm new to jag forums and have been scanning threads so I thought I'd sign up.I retired May 23 after 54 years as a master tech..so as I had some spare time I decided to buy a XK8.Sold as seen ,non runner, owner said ran outa has ,put gas turned key, backfired then quit.Timing chain I thought and rolled dice. The transmission is new and owner had spent a few $on this car so now I'm into a top end and chain rebuild...wish me luck...lol...I know how but as I would like to use oem parts as opposed to foreign, oem is what caused the problem...so...I shall get on the parts trail.Oh and yes I did the compression test and first 3 cyls were great alas not 4 7and 2....found split tensioner and chain wrapped up on sec sprocket. .good old plastic pem...so any good upgraded known makers appreciated.
I'm a big believer in oem as I worked for a dealer but this Jag timing set up takes the cake.Plastic tensioner of all things and 4 chains lol.Im not saying other manufacturers aren't guilty as well .I shall see what looks a more sturdier set up and yes I have actually gotten some decent parts from asia.PRC

Jaguar went through four designs of tensioner. The original plastic on the 4.0 and eventually ending up with metal on the 4.2 engine. Good news is the metal ones from the 4.2 can be used as replacements for the early plastic type.
The reason I asked about a full assessment in post #2 was to get an idea of how extensive the damage could be. Anything more than a one tooth jump on the chain and valves are likely to have collided with pistons. At that point, repair rapidly becomes very expensive in part alone.

Par particular attention to using the correct tools to set the camshaft timing. The correct cam timing on the AJ V8 is 45 degrees ATDC as outlined on page 74 of the PDF (page 26 of the course).
