Default 01 S-type Coil pack issue

hello,

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced as many coil issues as I have. I have an 01 S-Type 3.0 with 71K. I have just experienced my 4th ignition coil issue. The first set was changed by the dealer at about 40k. The car just started blowing the 10amp fuse for the coils. There was no engine lights and no computer codes. The dealer changed the coils because they didn't know what else to do. I changed the second set of coils myself at about 55K. Again, blown fuses no engine codes. The third coil issue was at 65K and I found one coil with cracked potting compound on the top. Again, no engine code only a blown fuse. This coil was under the manifold. I just had my latest event which was a coil under the manifold with a cracked body. This time as always there are no engine codes only a blown fuse.
This is very annoying because it is without warning. The car will simply die. My wife has had to have the car towed home twice in the last year because of this.
Has anyone else experience this many coil issues and is there anyone who has had the same issue with the computer not have error codes when the issue is so bad that the car will not run?

Something else seems wrong since we do not get this issue ever (or I don't recall it).

Of course cheap coils do give problems (I don't recall blown fuses) so are you fitting OE ones?

Thanks for your response.
I have 2 sets of oem and 1 other. It seems to happen with both.

as jagv8 said, look for something else thats shorting out the coil power supply, my first guess would be damaged wire between fuse and coils

I had the identical problem with my 01 3.0. Chaffed wires by the fuel rail connection was the cause (between the engine and firewall where the wiring crosses over). The intermittent fault was throwing codes, eating coils, and blowing fuses. Once I found the spot, it was a simple fix with some tape and wire loom.

Thank you all for your responses. I have checked the wiring but I will check again more carefully. I have also put a meter on the wires checking for shorts but no luck.
Is there a specific power supply for the coils? I assumed that the computer simply opens and closes a switch to energize the coil at the appropriate time. I still can't explain the lack of engine codes.

thanks for the input I will check out the wires again.

JTIS has diagrams, harness info etc. Modern PCM can fire coils directly. Suspect the PCM very last, if ever. They are soooo tough.

A short would have to be intermittent to fit your problems so a meter on its own isn't going to find it unless you can wiggle wires etc.

+1 on electrical short somewhere within the coil wire harness - more than likely a chaffed wire by the fuel rail as previously mentioned. Your going to have to pull back insulation, wire covering and look very carefully... electrical gremlins are the worst to sort out but 99% of the time is a short to ground causing your issue...
