Default '02 Steering Column Lock

Greetings All,

While working on my '02 recently, I noticed there doesn't seem to be any locking action for the steering column. Here's what the factory service manual has to say:

"The steering lock is secured to the lower casting of the adjustable steering column and consists of a locking pin and an
electric motor. The electric (sic) operated and controlled by the REM, GEM and the instrument cluster. The column is locked and
unlocked by inserting and removing the ignition key respectively."

Looking at the wiring diagrams for an '02, it looks like figure 12.3 would have all the details, but this section was omitted. You can even see the Table of Contents has a blank space for figure 12.3, but the actual pages skip right over it. I vaguely remember an older thread that mentioned Jaguar deliberately omitted details of the security system at the time. Curiously, if you search for the missing "12.3" you get many hits (such as in the component index and power distribution) but no such pages are present:

If you look at later wiring diagrams, figure 12.3 is present, so Jaguar must have decided this wasn't such top secret information after all.

Just curious if anybody knows anything about the steering column lock on earlier models. I'm not about to poke the bear, and won't be tearing apart the column anytime soon. I'm not too worried about theft, and as long as the lock stays retracted I'm perfectly fine with the present situation. Mostly I'm concerned in case the lock mechanism were to somehow come back to life and then fail in the locked position, leaving me stranded. I'm wondering if there is a separate fuse for the actuator, for instance. From what I understand, the lock mechanism is motor-driven, not spring loaded, so it should hopefully stay put where it is (retracted), but it would be nice to pull a fuse to be sure.

As an aside, I wonder if this feature was even fitted or active on all cars, depending on the market. When I originally purchased the car (2008), I had trouble passing emissions in Oregon because the car didn't have US spec software installed. I had to have it reflashed and then all was good. Maybe my car was originally sold in Mexico or something like that?

The US cars DO NOT have a locking column!!!!!!

When we installed a new INSTPK in the X200 we were warned to check NO during configuration when the 'COLUMN LOCK FITTED' question was asked.

If 'YES' was checked, the INSTPK would have a PERMANENT fault logged and the module needed to be discarded, (Jaguar would NOT pay for the module and the dealer would have to 'eat' the repair)

Very expensive mistake and the mechanic would likely be responsible or need to resign before the payment was taken from their pay.

Well, that's a nice definitive answer. I hope everybody is okay upon learning there was something I didn't know. I would feel horrible if rioting and looting broke out, but sometimes people behave like that if the world they know has been upended.

I thought US vehicles were required to have a steering column lock, going back at least several decades. I wonder if other security features used by Jaguar were enough to get around this.

The following is from the X200 S-Type Sports Sedan Intro (Publication Part No JJM 10 15 16/92 February 1999)

Steering Column Lock (where fitted)
Lock Operation
The steering column lock module (SCLM) and
ignition key switch are separate assemblies and
activation of the lock is remotely controlled by the
instrument pack, GECM and RECM. The column is
unlocked on insertion of the ignition key and is
locked when the key is withdrawn.
The SCLM is mounted on top of the lower casting,
on the upper column assembly, by two shear
bolts. A locking bolt projects down from the SCLM
through a hole in the lower casting to engage into
a splined collar on the steering column. The SCLM
is an integrated non-serviceable assembly, housing
a motor and worm drive for the locking bolt and
also an electronic printed circuit board. When
activated, the locking bolt is driven positively in
both the lock (down) and unlock (up) directions
and has a spring to help locate it into the trough
of the splined collar. When disengaging, the
locking bolt is driven upwards until it operates a
microswitch (within the SCLM) which causes the
motor to stop and also signals via the SCP bus that
the steering lock is off. To engage the lock, the
motor is energised for 350ms to lower the bolt.
System Control
The lock motor is powered by a switched 12V line
from the RECM and switched ground line from the
GECM, with both supplies being applied only
during lock operation. Initiation of motor drive
and direction and power supply switching is
controlled by the instrument pack via the SCP bus
when ignition key insertion or withdrawal is
detected. Identification is checked between the
SCLM and the other modules and the system will
not operate if, for example, a module has been
replaced and not re-programmed. System
diagnostics include defective modules and
incorrect module identification and also certain
SCLM faults, ie unconfimed lock or unlock
conditions and failed microswitch.
