Red face 03 STR using oil

My car has done 105000km's and is using about 1 litre of engine oil every 2000km's.

This shows as a burst of white smoke on starting, and black carbon on the stainles exhaust tails.
The dyno reading shows all cylinders readout the same.
The motor is running smoothly & there is no noticible loss of power.
Is this oil usage doing any harm to the motor ???- it is cheaper to continue topping up than paying bucks to have the motor fixed.

Well it is higher than most STR's but I would not spend any money to fix it. White smoke is water or coolant. Does the car use any coolant?? Does the oil consumption change with how you drive the car? What oil are you using? Some of the high mileage oils that are now out have been reported to reduce oil consumption but you only have some 60K+ miles on the engine. This seems like low mileage for oil consumption??

Not sure what this dyno reading is but you should perform a compression and leak down test to see if it is the rings or valve stem seals. I vote for the valve stem seals. Has the car sat without use for any long periods of time? This can be hard on the valve stem seals. They are a bunch easier to change than the rings but on a STR it will still be a hell of a job!!

My 2005 STR with 55K miles has the oil changed every 7500 mi and I use a quart of oil every 5000 to 6500 mi.

It may be cheapish to just put in the oil but I'd want to at least investigate a bit.

My 2004 STR with 76K miles is still not using any oil I can detect between changes, which I do at the jag intervals. (Famous last words!)

Now there's an interesting contrast?

It's probably chance. May also be because my car's done plenty of motorway (hwy) miles, which are good for cars.

Thank you all who have responded - I'll keep a eye on the oil level, but avoid any engine work till necessary.
Thanks again.

I find with my cars I burn more oil the harder I drive them. If I take my 8 series to the track I'll use a qt of oil in an afternoon. If I am driving it to and from the airport and not driving it hard I burn an unnoticeable amount.

I think Adrianl has the answer. I purchased a 400HP car for a reason!

It is interesting to see the wide differences in oil usage.

Porsche has no problem with up 1 qt/900 miles oil consumption on their cars. Several guys on different forums have tried to get engine work done while under warranty for high oil consumption of their new Porsche's. But the factory almost always says it is within normal limits.
