One more thought, mostly thinking out loud. After 5 years of inactivity, could the chip in the key forget its programming?

Not talking about the fob to lock/unlock the doors. Thinking about the little chip in the head of the key (no battery) that must respond when interrogated by PATS before the engine can start.

We have tried scanning and reprogram the car's system and below request is needed to be helped.

The next screen will ask you to enter the 3rd to 10th digits of the 11-digit alphanumeric value, which is printed on the label with a two-digit barcode. (For example, 0060E8E0240)

1. In the trunk on the right. You have to remove the base plate to expose the spare tire, then pull the right trim panel away from the body to see the label.

2. On the steering column. You can only see the label by tapping on the column.

**##***********
Can anyone available give me an image of the lable or numbers the scanner is requesting of?

Thanks

This might help http://www.jagrepair.com/images/TSB/...lumination.pdf
It's for 2003 MY. The VCATS label should be in the boot somewhere under the carpet, right side maybe?

That's a blow, take a look for the VCATS label in the trunk, but I'm not sure those numbers will help, worth a try though.

again there is no column code 2003 stype is a completely different car. your scanner is trying to do things it can’t do.

all you need to do is pull codes out of the cluster and tell us what’s going on.

I would also think that this is some kind of issue with the security module (apparently called PATS). And if not, it should be the battery, but if you are definitely sure that the battery is perfect, it can still be a battery-power-supply issue, meaning: If your battery is good, it does not mean that the battery voltage indeed arrives, where it is supposed to go. The car sat there for 5 years. I don't think anybody here mentioned already to check for contact corrosion, esp. all the ground connections...

Sadly that's 2003, a very different car than his 1999.

OK, then I'm struggling to understand why you posted the TSB at all if you understood it didn't apply...

I'm not trying to start any flame war or such, just can't figure out the intent or what it is I've missed.

I keep re-reading this whole thread and it's a really odd one.

I wonder if the PCM has had water ingress.

The TSB is for a 2003 fault but doesn't say you won't find the code sticker on the earlier car, I assume the code exists somewhere on the earlier cars.

Thanks Steve for the contribution, could a dead alternator cause the steering lock and engine disabled with no crank to start?
