Default 2.5 v6 ZF gearbox oil and filter change.

I am getting some independent Jaguar repair shop prices in next week for doing the job. I must admit to being slightly anxious maybe? I get the feeling it could be a very good thing but also it could be a whole bunch of hassle.

But anyway the car has now done 74k and the gearbox needs an oil and filter change, its first change too. A new sump and sump bolts will be part of it.

The gear changes have got slightly worse since buying the car in Mar 2016.
Its always had the "zf screach" from day of purchase. But other changes have become more clunky.

As soon as I have a good price with a workshop that seems good enough, I'll book it in. But I am feeling a bit edgy about the end result.

Why be edgy? A competent transmission shop should be able to the maintenance without issues.

Don't forget to replace the electrical sleeve "o-ring" as well. If not replaced I believe you will be sorry in the near future.

Hi
I did mine myself a few years a go, just for peace of mind
I used the correct parts, every body recommend the ZF kit, mine came with filter pan( updated type), 7 litres of ZF lifeguard 6, new pins updated larger heads, mechatronics sleeve updated type, early sleeves were prone to leaking
the gearbox holds closer to 11 liters, but a lot of it stays in the torque convertor, which can only be drained by removing
only about 6.5 will drain out, hence the kit came with 7L to refill, some companies now use a machine that connects to the gearbox, while its running and flushes all the oil out and new in, which replaces all the oil
I did the service my self and it felt a lot smoother
If you have this done at a jaguar dealer, they also reset the adaptations, this is the gearbox memory, the gearbox learns how you drive, I paid a local indy to do the adaptations reset, as I didnt want to do it
if you gearbox does strange things, some times it stores it and remembers it , that why it does it again in certain situations, reseting the adaptations on mine made the biggest difference
also I was told by them when you want to cruise, drive smoothly, keep it in normal and when you want to drive fast/sporty, use the sport mode button, dont always leave it in sport, because if you drive normal in sport, it remember that and you end up with no difference between the two modes, which can only be reset with jaguar software
there two different learnt memorys of how you drive, my car is completely different in both modes
thanks
joe

Another vote to replace the sealing sleeve. Remember it can ONLY be replaced with the pan off so if you forget you will need to drop the pan and fight to get the fluid level correct again.

It's cheap to buy too.

I think the key phrase there is "a competent transmission shop". You never know until its too late from my experience. But I am looking at local Jaguar specialists.

Could you please clarify the electrical sleeve o-ring ? I haven't heard of that, but if its worthwhile doing at the same time then I will.

Thank you.

Thanks Joe, good advice there.

I do the same with mine in only using sport mode when I want to go quicker in some road situations when I need the car to be more responsive. Apart from that I cruise in the normal gearbox setting for good fuel economy. The car has changed my driving style too. I am very much more happy to just cruise in this and watch all the car driving maniacs giving it death around me or preferably away from me.

I phoned three local independent Jaguar specialists this morning. With the first one the phone has been engaged every time I've called over a 4 hour period.
The second one had a recorded message saying sorry they are on holiday and will be back on the 26th of September. The third one said Jaguars don't need a gearbox oil change because they are sealed for life mate. They make a big play on their website about being experts in Jaguars.
I'll find one soon.

I have found the place and the price I am content with in Leicester.
For the whole job the price is £225 all inclusive.
Parts included are:
ATF fluid
Sump and bolts.
Electrical cable seal.
To reset the gearbox ECU adaptations.

So next week I will book it in.

That sounds too low and I'd be worried it's the wrong fluid or some such.

I will phone them on Monday and make sure they have quoted for everything and the correct spec of ATF.
They said it would be between 2 and 3 hours work. I priced up the parts last year as a retail customer and it came to £170 or there about.
So the garage can get that in at least 50% less than I can.
Say £80 for parts and 2 hours labour = roughly £185. It's there about at £183 plus vat.
I'll see on Monday.

Update.

Talked to the workshop this morning.
After talking to the receptionist for a while who was trying to have a two way conversation with the guy who would be doing the job and myself, I then spoke directly with him.
The price quoted was not for the 6 speed zf so after talking for 5 minutes and establishing it is the six speed gearbox we discussed about the finer points of the job. I had told the receptionist last week that it is the 6 speed zf. Anyway, got it sorted now.
The job is a shade under £400 for the zf box.
He sounds very experienced in this work and I feel confident now. It will be a half day job.

I miss doing a lot of DIY I used to do on cars and bikes.
Lying on a rug on bare concrete under the car when its freezing outside.
That was after clearing the drive of snow !

My intention with this thread is that if it all goes well then I will name the workshop if that's ok with site admin? Purely for the benefit of other members in the midlands area of England who may wish to have the same or similar work done. The guy did say today that having the gearbox serviced would make a considerable improvement to the way the car drives.

If something is good, its worth sharing.
