Default 2000 S Type Starter Problem

My 2000 S Type sounds like it is trying to start, it cranks but doesn't start. After a while it will "catch" and start right up. Does this sound like a bad starter?

They hardly ever fail so it probably isn't faulty.

What should I look at then? My car makes the starting sound but it wont click over so i can drive it. It is not the battery, I already checked that.

Starting problems can be tough to figure out and may need a long list of tools etc as well as full details of the car and the symptoms. If you have an OBD tool, a 'scope, multimeter and can work through the circuit diagrams you may well be able to figure it out but if not then finding a competent tech may be the best plan. If you swap parts, it gets very expensive very quickly.

Things which could be the cause: CMP, CKP, MAF, MAP, air leak, coils, plugs, fuel pump, fuel filter, compression and many more but if it cranks for a while then it's not likely the starter.

It seems to start fine when cold, when you drive it for a while it won't start. Let it cools off, it starts.

Classic hot soak no start. If the car will CRANK and start when cold but will not CRANK and start after driving. You are 90% chance you need a starter motor. JagV8 is right the the denso starter has a good record. But after 10 years I hope you don't let that turn you in the wrong direction.

I answered your other port about removing the starter.

GOOD LUCK
