2001 3.0 L S-Type sometimes won't start

A few days ago I purchased a 2001 3.0L S-Type and sometimes it will not start (most of the time it starts fine about a 85% success rate). No-clicking sounds, all the lights and power seems to be on. It just won't turn over as if the security system does not recognize the key? Please help me. In researching on the web I am hearing all kinds of horror stories about this car (transmission problems, etc...). Any clues about what could be happening? Somebody please tell me that they have owned this car and it worked reasonably well... I am not looking for perfection but am feeling very anxious about my new purchase.
Thanks for any help,
Sandy

I had one for over 4 years and replaced the lower ball joints, the coolant expansion tank (£80 - LHD ones are cheaper if you drive on the wrong side of the road)), external temperature sensor (£4), all standard faults.
I replaced brakes as well but thats normal on any car. The transmission fluid/filter changed at 60K miles (supposed to be sealed for life ) to hopefully avoid any problems. Sold the car recently and the new owner is delighted with it.
Regarding your problem I would have a look at the gear selector which may be inhibiting you starting the car.

It seems to be the gear shift was not quite in P as was suggested above. By holding the thing forward at the same time as turning it over it seemed to work. Does anyone know if this is expensive to fix? Thanks for your suggestions. I must admit when it does start it sure is a pleasure to drive.

I'm not often wrong!
Glad you have an idea of what to look. It may just need some adjustment to the shift, Not had to do that to my old car but Im aware that some have had to.
Enjoy the car.
