Default 2002 S-Type Transmission replacement

Hello,

Wife's 2002 S-Type Sport 4.0 was stuck in forward gear. Shop say transmission is shot and needs replacing, approx. $3000 along with throttle body assembly. Long story short they are talking $5000, said car not worth repairing and I agree at $5000 They said these transmissions were problematic and beginning with the 2003 models they implemented a different transmission.

Would a newer model transmission be compatible with the 4.0 2002 S-Type.

The car only has 64,000 miles, been garage kept and looks/drives like new. I have found transmissions on Ebay sub $700, free shipping.

any and all advice greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Sorry, no.

There's lots of used transmissions available for your car in the sub-$1000 area, plus labour.

Not sure what that's got to do with a throttle body?

Shop may not know the car as they appear ignorant and guessing. TB is likely fine unless they mess with it.

The later cars have the ZF 6HP26 gearbox fitted to the 4.2 litre engine beginning with MY2002.5 in the North American market. The 4.0 litre unit was fitted with the Ford 5R55N, which is easily repairable with many modifications available to correct wear to the solenoid bores.

The gearboxes are not interchangeable as the wiring loom, PCM and TCM are different.

Did they check the cable from the gear selector to the gearbox and that can also cause difficulty shifting? The cable can stretch or the bolts holding it to the gearbox may be missing.

Find a competent shop or a Jaguar specialist to work on your vehicle.

As was posted above you have a dead common Ford 5 speed transmission. You can get a rebuilt unit with warranty for under $2K.

All the problems have been found at this late date and that transmission can be built to take 1000+ HP. The same unit was used in Mustangs and Explorer's for years.

First I would get a second opinion because there are number of things (Mainly the valve Body) that could be your problem.

What does the fluid look like?
Has the unit ever been serviced? Remember it's NOT sealed for the life!

But you have a far bigger problem. Have the timing tensioners been replaced? The 4.0L requires this and if it has not been done I would get rid of the car now.

Default Thanks for the answers and advice.

The throttle body has been an issue with the car for sometime. The shop that has been working on it claimed to have cleaned it once, fix didn't last. The shop owner is clearly biased against the S-Type. He told me 3 years ago that the air conditioner had a leak, it still works fine.

T-Bird, what is the issue with the Timing tensioners, costs?

Thanks to all for the answers and advice.

Be doubtful about the TB as it may well be fine.

Search for tensioners and read a while.

Default Plastic Timing Tensioners

Thanks again for the replies.

Why in the world would Ford put plastic inside an engine? Crazy.

Wife passed away in January, I haven't got to do anything with the car right away. Look at options.

A couple of last questions, could a newer 4.2 engine/transmission from a R Type be easily fitted to this car... would the plastic timing tensioners still be an issue?

thanks.

The AJ-V8 engine was designed and built by Jaguar, not Ford. The early S-Types used a Ford 5R55N gearbox.

The primary and secondary tensioners and associated parts can be replaced without the need for removing or replacing the engine. There are many threads on this forum discussing the matter. The latest design for the tensioners uses metal.

It would not be possible to replace the AJ28 with the later 4.2 supercharged engine as the ECM, TCM and wiring looms are all different.

almost everybody puts plastic in their motors, from Porsche and Mercedes to GM. It's cheap and runs quietly until failure. In the 60's the cam chain drive gears on GM's were coated with plastic, it all fell off, but it was quiet.

not many miles, might be worth a second opinion on why it doesn't shift, there are a few reasons that are not hard fix's.

Yes as was posted above all tensioners have plastic in them. That's not the problem. The problem was the design.

Even the latest 3rd generation metal tensioners are still partially plastic.
