Any thoughts?

Thinking to myself outloud here:

Being an '03, I would be looking for a slight vacuum leak before I throw alot of money at a hail mary on a TB replacement.

The high RPM issue does not sound like the trans.

Of course the PCM does that when in Sport.

Otherwise sounds like a problem.

On the 3.0 it would be an air leak. That would be one possible cause on the other engines. Other ideas, anyone?

Although this has only happened to me a few times, it only happened when i was going up or down a rather steep grade if i remember right. So maybe it is not related at all. Of course my STR I believe likes to mess with me by turning on the Sport mode all by itself. Maybe I need to drive it faster. Or I am going senile. Either are plausible.

The Sport thing sounds like a clue. Could be a chafed wire. I'd want to know / fix it.

If it's flipping into Sport it will of course hold onto revs.

Our '05, 3.0 does this as well, has been since ownership some 2 + years.

I would like to know why the clock switches from 12 HR to 24 HR by itself, more often than sport mode switches.

Aha - YOU have the mouse

Being more sensible, that's another thing I'd want to understand.

I agree with all about the reliability of the ZF6HP26 transmission; it is reliable, so long as the ATF fluid is replaced at sensible intervals, like 60,000 miles for full-synth. fluid. There has been software control issues, but there has been many changes, you need to be sure you have the latest. My autobox, same as yours, has done 122,000mile and is changing as well as any autobox I've ever driven, AFTER an ATF fluid change with an anti-shudder additive. No jerks, judders, unexplained changes, or hunting. And I really give it the beans once a week -- no probs.

I think I'll start a log of occurances to see how often I notice this happening. Taking note of driving conditions and vehicle settings (observable under driving conditions) - it hasn't happened lately but no harm in starting to collect data if it happens again. So far, no codes or any other indicators so I guess it will have to start here.

When I experienced the RPM hold thingy, it wasn't quite the same as how the car holds RPM in the Sport setting, it would hold it (RPM) higher than what the car had previously exhibited as a customary level of sport shifting RPM hold...if that makes any sense. And I don't believe the Sport indicator was lit last time, although that doesn't really rule anything out.

I had the dealer show me the tranny fluid after the gasket replacement and it showed no signs of abnormal wear (25k miles, i'd hope not) - having burned out an X Type tranny I wanted to see it for myself.

May be a computer issue or wire like you said. Very, very, intermittent for me so far.
