Default 2004 str

Looking at a 2004 str 188k kms which is going to need a bit of work. Long story short, they want $3500cad. It has a transmission fault and also apparently the power steering is shot. It’s been sitting at a shop for 6 months. I went to start it up today and the engine seemed strong but has restricted performance, when placed in reverse it literally launched violently. Not sure if the brakes were shot which made it lunge worse but seems like it will need a transmission. I just so happen to have an extra excellent condition zf transmission on a 03 v6 s type which is probably going to be decommissioned this year and parted out. Lmk is it worth the gamble and if anyone knows if the zf transmission from a v6 03 would be an easy swap to an 04 str. Pretty sure most parts are identical besides the motor but I could be wrong.

Yes, that's the big question, if an STR has the same transmission. I do not know the answer.
But the description of your transmission fault makes me think, if your only problem may possibly be a low ATF level?

Maybe you find inspiration in my S-Type ATF change DIY guide...:

Low atf would definitely be an easy fix but would it cause a fault code upon startup? Wouldn’t it not go into gear if fluid was low?

was the motor idling? it will definitely "launch" if the motor is idling at 2500rpm!

Yea it was cold as hell and it will probably need a battery but not sure it was idling higher then 1500. Starting to think it might actually be worth the gamble. The power steering apparently had the pump replaced while it was there but still has issues. Not sure how long it will be available since it’s pretty cheap for an str. Will scan it and take a look on their hoist this Saturday. I’m thinking with the amount of work it’ll need that $3000 is my max.

If the rear sub frame is rusted out or there’s significant rust under there I’ll walk away from it.

I don't know about the question about the code at low ATF, but if and how good or how bad it "goes into gear" could depend on HOW low the ATF is - yes, without ATF, it would not engage at all, but with low ATF it might engage in some gears, but not smoothly....

Just two observations, beretta9 . . .

Checked your bio for location and came away so impressed . . . a 117 year old who is into an STR project.
Well done, my man. (Yes, I'll be careful not to trip over your walker!) LOL.

On a more respectful note and after so many years spent on (and under) these Jaguars, I tend to tot up likely expenses of all the issues I find . . . and after so many cars, I know where to look and why! Here's the tough part . . . then double it for all the hidden issues that you will never find until you have owned, driven and maintained it for quite some time. Works for me across all the cars in my sig and many more.

Cheers and best wishes,

Yeah it’s not 2105 yet so I guess my bio is wrong. The hidden issues shouldn’t be a problem I’ve owned a 02 4.0 for over two decades so I’m familiar with the motor even though the 4.2 is a bit different especially with that supercharger on her.

The Zf trans tends to survive well despite mistreatment. Low ATF can just be corrected - but is it low? Be sure to check properly.

Bad changes are often caused by bad sensors/actuators connected to the PCM (aka ECM), and then upset the trans. Fix any such first.

I would not install any 6 cylinder parts on a supercharged 400HP V-8 car. I think your headed for problems. Talk to some ZF people first.
I had been recommending the CTSC but they have apparently shut down and the web site is for sale?
