Default 2005 S-Type V6 Gearbox Fault

Having issues with the transmission but wondering if its more computer than the actual gearbox. every time I drive the car I get a different result. Sometimes it's fine. Sometimes it shifts rough and jerks. Sometimes it won't downshift through the ranges. Sometimes I get the Gearbox Fault message, sometimes I don't. Any ideas?

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to S-Type forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

Three questions:

1. What is your car's current mileage?

2. When was the last time you did a transmission fluid drain-and-fill, and what ATF did you use?

3. How old is your battery?

Answer these questions and you'll get more specific help here....

I would start with fluid level and condition plus the other suggestions shared here from Jon89

+1 on fluid level and list of items mentioned by Jon89.

Are there any DTCs stored in the system and is the MIL on?

The ZF 6HP26 gearbox can produce various codes or restricted performance due to misfire(s) by the engine.

Worth checking fuel trims to make sure it's not the engine that's upsetting the gearbox (yes it does happen). Very cheap and easy with OBD tool such as elm327.

Do at least an ATF drain-and-fill now. Your fluid has long since lost all of its friction modifiers and is contributing to the demise of your transmission....
