Not sure about our S-types, but many cars will not engage the A/C if the ambient temp is below X no matter how the controls are set or what attempts are made to override.

I bought an accurate enough temp sensor with probe and LCD display for £1.24 inc P&P (under $2) from ebay, new, buy-it-now.

Good advice above, if the shop is confident that the AC is good, you can move on to the other suspects.

The schh noise must be a leak behind the dash then. It sound like leaking gas. However surely all the freon would have leaked out by now resulting in no more hiss?

If leak is in core behind the dash. I guess we are talking major money to fix?

Going to call the air con guy tomorrow and get him to check gas pressure etc.
