Angry ARRGH gearbox fault

Hi, I have a 2005 S-Type 4.2 with the sport package. After some heavy rainstorms recently, I received a gearbox fault message and the car will not go over 10 mph. After looking through the forums, I noticed it could be because there is water in the TCM. My problem is I cannot locate the TCM. Can anyone tell where it is, what it looks like, how to remove, check and dry it out if needed?

Mine has/had the same issue when I would take it through automatic car washes, I too am looking on how to "waterproof" the TCM...What I did to remove the gearbox fault message is just to use a OBD II code reader and clear the codes...and the message goes away and runs fine after..but still looking on where to locate the TCM so I can waterproof the thing !

You can't and don't need to, it's surrounded by oil inside the sealed transmission. You're chasing a fault but in the wrong way. Commonly it's a failing or flattish battery. Sometimes it's anything that upsets the engine a little (water, occasionally, failing battery - often) which then annoys the gearbox. Go after the cause not the outcome.

Boot leaks are common in these. Don't know if there is a module or bus connector in there that could be causing it, but if related to the rains, I'd have a look under the spare for evidence of moisture intrusion. Could also be degrading your grounds giving the effect of a failing battery.

Thank you for the information. We replaced the battery which turned off the gearbox fault message but does not seem to have corrected the issues. The issues now are engine revving like it is looking for gear, shifting hard, and the tachometer is bouncing around.

The other day, put it in gear and did not move. Turned the car off, restarted the car, put in gear and then was able to get going. Have not received the gearbox fault message or check engine light yet but feel it is soon coming. Is there something else I need to check?

If you DIY, check the bolts for the gear shift cable on the side of the trans. If not, find a jag indy who knows these cars.
