Default Auto Gearbox Problem

Hi all,

Bit of a newboy here so if this is in wrong place apologies.

Just bought a 1999 S type. Showing Gearbox fault but does not appear to be running differently and Auto gears seem fine. Have read something about cable adjustment? Can anybody elaborate? Thanks in advance.

Wecome aboard.

If the trans is doing what it is designed to do, then it is deemed fine.

A fluid drop and refill with careful noting of the old fluid colour, wil do no harm at all.

Once the drop and refill numbers (about 6) get to the point of the outcoming fluid is close to the incoming fluid in colour, then drop the pan and install a new filter.

Cable issues is mainly related to the ZF 6 speed in the X202 models.

Engine running issues will cause the trans do do weird stuff, due to the info from the engine being used to operate the transmission internals. My way of explaining the "smoke and mirrors" of the electronic transmissions.

One quick and cheap sort out is to disconnect the battery, have a beer or 3, and reconnect. That usually clears these things (not always) BUT, if the fault that caused the light is still lurking, it will illuminate soon enough. Then a code read will be the only way to sort it.

Agreed with above.

Also worth checking are the vacuum lines. Your 1999 has a rubber elbow located under the lower intake manifold that are notorious for cracking. Any small type of vacuum leak will cause the gearbox fault as well.

Get codes read.

Thanks Rick.

I keep forgetting that sucker as both ours are disconnected at the vac spigot at the throttle body.

Not true to design, but works a treat and the engine still breathes just fine.

Considering putting it as designed ONE day, but the list is looooong and its not near the top.

Many thanks for replies. It only happens once the car has been running for about 10 minutes so my guess is a fluid change needed.

If you have a fault light get the codes read. Then post back here to help decode them.

Hoping to get a fault code reader tomorrow. Basically I was conned on the car. I should have stuck to my own rule never to buy a V6 s type auto because of the well known gearbox probs on early models.

Have given up with the S type. The thing wouldn't even connect with the code reader and I really lost faith in it.

So bought an x type manual which just needs a 02 sensor 9 code 1642)

Drives lovely its manual and a bit younger too!

Bad code reader or maybe you'd blown the fuse? S-Types are standard OBD from day 1.

Well I sold the S type now and much as I love them won't be getting another one.

Happy with the X type although I am likely to be teased perhaps because of it being based on the humble Ford Mondeo.

But the drive is excellent and a lot lighter than the S type.

The O2 sensor is a simple job after I find my special socket with the cut out for the wires!

Thanks everybody who offered help and advice. This really is a great forum.
