You should also check the linkage cable, the lock screws are prone to coming loose and slipping.

Could somebody help me with this question please..?.I'm about to buy a 2001 s type v6,the seller told me to select the car in drive, you 1st have to select 4th gear in the manual gear, then drive..to get it moving.. Is this a common fault,ie,stretched cable, sensor, or low on fluid, ie,does the gearbox need flushing and refilling with new fluid.. Many thanks for any help,Nick..

Run away.... FAST!!! (could be a stretched cable or worse...) Unless you want to spend anywhere from $300 to $3,000+ for a replacement transmission...
