Default Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Okay. I got a 01 jaguar S-type shortly after getting it. It seemed to be having Transmission issues. Real slow take off. Losing power going up hills. So I put a new filter and fluid in the Transmission. Seemed to be working better. Then a week later it just stopped going down the road. I had all the gear minus Drive before this. Now I have reverse and the other gears work it's just high rpm and barely even moving. I've read about a million things it could be I just dont know where to begin and I'd rather not replace the transmission if that's not the issue. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Check for loose/stretched shift cable. Commonly needs replacing at this age.

Did you change the fluid/filter yourself? You might want to check the fluid level and that all connections/plugs loosened for the change are tight and there are no leaks. The symptoms described can be the result of low internal pressures resulting from an inadequate transmission fluid level. If the "loosing power going up hills" is actually the result of internal slippage, I would not recommend using the car until it is sorted, as this can be hard on the internal friction linings.

If the gearbox is in 'Limp-Home-Mode' then it will default to a high gear (4th I think) so it will be painfully slow to get going.

READ THE DTCs from the PTEC (ECM/TCM). There will be a fault logged.
The 5R55N is a Ford box so it should not be that hard to find someone that can help locally.

Jaguar did issue a TSB for the cable.

A 5 hour tow may exceed the value of the vehicle!

You previously mentioned the shift cable was loose. Did you fix that yet?

If you need to take the car to a shop, you don't have to go to the dealer. The 5R55N transmission is a garden variety Ford product. There are several bazillion units from this transmission family on the road. It is nothing exotic by any means. Any semi-competent transmission shop can handle the diagnosis and repair.

Have you retrieved any of the fault codes yet? If so, please post them so we can help you. Please list the 5 digit code, such as P0745. Some scanners and code readers give a definition that is not always accurate for Jaguar, so the actual code is what we need.

Two possibilities here:

1) There are no fault codes present. (Not very likely)

2) You’ll need a professional level scanner to see the codes. Most consumer level readers can only display emission-related codes. Please tell us the brand and model number of the devices used. Hopefully somebody is familiar with them and can provide more info.

You still haven’t mentioned if you secured the loose cable. From Troubleshooting 101, always fix any known problems before digging deeper elsewhere. This could save you a LOT of grief.

Also, please describe exactly how you determined the cable was loose. Not trying to bust your butt, just trying to understand what you’re seeing and figure out how best to proceed.

Please look at the indicator lights on the shift lever bezel, as described in this recent thread, post #5:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...9/#post2230725

That quick test should help determine the condition and adjustment of the shift cable. Please remember the indicator lights are feedback from the transmission, NOT the lever itself. If the cable is loose or out of adjustment, and you place the shift lever in any of the detents, the transmission will not be fully in gear.

Okay sorry its took so long to respond but the reason I think it's the shifter cable is because the cable inside the car by the shifter is visably loose. There is very little tension in it at all. I am not a mechanic but I can figure things out if I study it long enough. And I've move the shifter in and out of all the gears many times and some times it seems to be engaging into gear but most of the time it doesn't but I can move the lever to the right of the shifter and it will engage into gear but only with my help.

I also found out that while my mom was driving it she was giving my brother a ride home and while driving down the road he apparently shoved it as hard as he could into park. Could that have loosened the cable?

You may well need to replace the cable.

It's never wise to use brute force on such things.

Ouch! Please tell us he's just a toddler and had no idea what he was doing.

What happened with the transmission at the time? Did it make some horrible noises, start shaking, lock up the tires, etc.? I'm hoping there's some internal protection to prevent actually engaging reverse or park while in motion, but I don't really know. Anybody familiar with this?

If the transmission has such protection, you got VERY lucky and hopefully just need a new cable.
