Default Can you check for a bad coil without any codes?

i have what i believe is an intermittent coil / plug, sometimes the engine just bogs down and snaps back in line after a few seconds of poor performance. is there anyway to check and see what coil/plug might be the problem??? there is no history of codes when i take it to the shop for a scan. please help, thanks.

I had bad coils that did not throw codes, but when I got on the car, it felt like a misfire and sometimes the CEL would flash at me (but nothing stored in memory).

You could try using a coil tester. Someone posted about them before...

Yes. You need to find a shop that has a Coil Stress Tester. Ford had so many returned COP coils that were not bad they started having their service departments get and use those machines.

I would call your biggest Ford dealer and talk to the service guy to see if they have one. They are more rare in the independent garages.

You did not put your car details down but coils are a wear item and after so many years and miles you would be better off changing them all.

Have you checked for any oil in the plug wells??

TBIRD6, not being the most mechanically educated owner, i called the shop where i have my wife's 02 t-bird serviced and he said bring it over with a laugh, and bring $245 per coil, might need a few....when my wife's t bird needed coil(s) it was a much harsher driving experience, shaking, growling, drumming sound with a engine lite lit. my car seems to be acting up only before warm up and disappears...he just did my trans service for less than $600 and its been running great, i will followup with this.

Purchase a COP tester - about $80 - $100 at www.amazon.com
