Those type problems are very hard to find. If you've plenty of tools, time, car experience etc then google for lots of data. Otherwise find a competent tech.

Do you know if it is the key cylinder switch on the column that is giving you the problem? Try this next time move the shifter selector from “P” to “N” position and see if it starts.

So you are saying that your starter is engaging and turning the engine but the car will not start is that correct? If this is the situation the next time it will not start take the shifter selector and move it from “P” to “N” position and see if the car will start.

I have this same problem intermittently, mostly when the engine is warm. My mechanic has a theory -- we know that I have a bent flex-plate, and he thinks that this occasionally affects the placement of the crank position sensor. You may not have the flex plate problem, but a bad, or off kilter, sensor can cause these types of issues. I don't know all the sensors on the s-type yet, but from a previous car I know that the crank, cam and timing sensors can often be the culprit when it comes to hard or no starting issues.

he drove it into the nearest lake, after taking 3-4 times to get it started and was therefore, late for work.

juans-jag, your S-Type has the worn fuel pump blues. It takes three ignition key turn cycles to build up enough fuel pressure ignite her, then she'll run ok...unless you gun her for awhile. No problem...pull up rear seat and swap in a new one. Problem sol-ved.
