Default CD Player 6 disc glove box won't read CD - 2000 S Type

Hi All,

I have tried looking through other model year forums but not able to find;

My 6 player disc player shows on the head unit the discs loading but not reading/playing music.

I have ensured the discs are loaded correctly

There is no disc stuck in the CD player unit

I can 'hear' the unit switching from disc to disc & it shifts from track to track no music

It did work when I first purchased the vehicle in July 2022.
On the positive side, the cassette deck works great, tough finding decent used one though!

Are you hell bent on using a CD changer? If not, your S is an early enough model that you can easily swap in a module to give you a 3.5mm (aux) input instead of the player.

It could be a dirty lens. You can remove the changer relatively easily and give it a good cleaning.

Usually the drive motor not 'spinning' the CDs is the cause for the 'no reading' the Discs.

Repair or swap in a used replacement?

While I haven't had to do that kind of repair on a car, the symptom you describe normally means that the lens is dirty. That's my experience from fixing the occasional home-CD-player. SOoif you can remove the CD player and you can open it, you could clean the laser reading lens with cotton-tips and alcohol (not beer, but like fairly pure alcohol e.g. from a pharmacy... )

isopropyl alcohol, the higher percentile, the better

> isopropyl alcohol
Yes, that one. I have it in my garage, but just could not remember the spelling (....just like: I would have bought a Lamborghini, but I could not spell it... )

I also use this kind of alcohol before spray painting and before sticking anything onto a car (like emblems, chrome deco), and before applying liquid gaskets.

You can try but with the age of the unit I think your fighting a losing battle?
It was not a quality unit when new and now your car is 22+ years old. Multi-disc players are well know to fail because of the added complexity of the mechanics inside.
Any used units will be in the same or worse condition.

I would suggest using after market gear and maybe get a few additional features that you currently don't have?

Yes, but have you ensured quality music is loaded in the magazine? IIRC, the stock CD system has a "music critic" feature and is very selective about what it will actually play. I'm not sure if there's a way to turn off this feature. In the meantime, try loading the following discs to be sure:

Bobby Blue Bland - The Duke Years

Traffic - Welcome to the Canteen

Robert Palmer - Sneaking Sally through the Alley

Little Feat - Waiting for Columbus

Lloyd Cole and The Commotions - 1984-1989

Any CD by the BeeGees (Don't judge me)

Better try Queen or Jim Morrison.
About the reply above (3 up): Old Multidisc player are not all doomed to fail. I have a 10 disk player in my van, which I used initially in my car in Germany. I think it is Pioneer (brand) and it is about 26 years old.

thanks for your reply

I will look into an aux in option, currently I'm using a Nulaxy MK29 FM transmitter with a blue tooth option to play music from my phone

It's not perfect but working well enough

thanks for your reply, I will see what is available once I remove my unit, I might try taking it to a vintage stereo repair shop too.

I like the music selections.... well maybe not the Bee gees, as much, I have 1000 CD's so a few to choose from, btw I did use commercially made CD's
