Angry Clockspring

I have a 2005 S Type that started with a strumming noise that I couldn't identify the source, it turned out to be an alarm for Cruise Control, my steering wheel controls went down one by one over a couple of weeks, after reading a few forum posts I replaced the Clockspring, this solved the strumming noise and gave me all my steering wheel functions back.. great problem solved - Not So !!! it lasted around a month and started again, I recently had an MOT and needed the Horn to work so replaced the Clockspring again !! same thing lasted 4 - 5 weeks I'm now on my 4th Clockspring in 6 months Any Ideas out there ???

Where are you getting the replacements? Are they all from the same source? OEM? Aftermarket? Used?

Have you dissected any of the bad units to see what has failed?

+1. When mine went out (the first symptom was the rarely used steering wheel audio control was dead), my specialist Jaguar repair facility sourced the part from a dealer, citing that certain parts should never be aftermarket or used. The clockspring is one of them. Replacement has not failed.

Hi getting the parts used, from a well known on line auction site... I think I will have to purchase an unused one and see if that sorts the problem - I wouldn't know how to find a fault on a dissected one but my mechanic is getting good at changing them !!!

Without a doubt, the clockspring is a Ford part and will have been used in other non-Jaguar applications; your job, should you decide to accept it (as they said in Mission Impossible) is to find out which other cars the part was used on... this could open the door to a more reasonable (Dorman, Standard, etc.) part available from a non-dealer source...

The part should have a Ford part number cast on the housing to use as a starting point.

Good luck on your search!

It's really odd that there are so few people who've had clockspring problems at all yet this one has needed so many! Could it not be some other fault which just looks like it's the clockspring?

Is the clock Spring being loaded/ tensioned, correctly as instructed on case? So allowing it to not overtighten in any direction/ rotation?

I think you have fitted it wrong. Mine was and the flat cable fatigued because of the abnormal bend.
Search under my posts, there are pics.

Slight off-topic, but how is your car these days, SRT? I must say I was impressed at how you resurrected an abandoned car without breaking the bank.

The car is fine. The original repair lasted about 700km. Then the bolt loosened itself again, strangely at low load srating and driving out a parking lot. The power steering went, and the alternator came on with a whole Christmas tree of lights. This time I took the steps to machine an outer sleeve a couple of times with the correct diameter of the stump of the crank. I then fitted a nut at the end, filled the sleeve with grinding paste and lapped the shaft.
Then I bought a heavy duty air impact gun and tightened the 16mm bolt as much possible on a fatter split cone ring, and it has lasted since. I also used loctite on both surfaces, on the outer part of the cone and the inner part against the crank. It has done over 1000km since that, and it seems to hold.
After this, I have a couple of issues with the gearbox, it tends to thump into gear at low speed, if not careful. It does it a medium to low power. Perfect at higher power. I pussyfoot around at the moment, but I suspect my oil pressure is too low at times, and the clutch does not act smoothly.
I will get to that in due course, while treating the car carefully.
I will get that right, one way or another.
It seems daunting at first, but I get bolder and bolder!
Sorry for the diversion!
Otherwise what a car!!!
