Darn Turret
That hard plastic stuff sucks.
Harrumph! No good deed and all that....eh?
(I'm reminded of 1987 when HSL-44 Detachment 4 was doing work-ups in preparation for our cruise to the Persian Gulf to relieve the USS Stark. We had some training scheduled in Guantanamo Bay before it was "GITMO" and had hitched a ride down there aboard an LPD. As the SH-60B was relatively new to the Navy's inventory at the time, it had not yet been qualified for flight operations aboard that class of ship. So we got a one-time exemption allowing us to fly on-board, stow it below decks, then trot it out, spread it, and fly off to NAS Gitmo when close enough. Otherwise, we had to find ways to occupy ourselves pretending we were on a commercial cruise ship whilst staying out of the way and notice of the "shoes" working the ship so as not to be forced into some form of servitude. They had a Marine detachment fly out to do deck-practice with their AV-8B's as we transited the Carolina coastline, and that was mildly entertaining. Anyway, the wondrous day finally dawned and the Det Maint. Officer and a spare Lt. who was not a member of our detachment but whom the squadron wanted to expose to deployed ops mounted up and flew off to Gitmo while we were some 100 mi. distant. Later in the afternoon, while preparing to enter port, the shoes discovered they'd broken a "shoe-valve" or some such and it was a critical item for port entry - it no worky- you no come in! But lo and behold, there was a spare aboard NS Gtmo! "No problem, we just dispatched an aircraft over there this morning, take it to them and they can bring it out to us..they're not certified to land here, but they can hoist it down."
Presently, the Detachment OIC was summoned to the communications dept. where he found the maint. officer on the other end of the radio, "Dave....we'd love to help y'all out and all, you know that....but see? the thing is....1600 hrs came, and happy hour started at the O'club...and you see, we can't legally fly it out to ya...."
Moments afterward, the ship's Captain and Executive Officer strolled into the wardroom where the other jr. pilot on the det and myself were enjoying an ice-cream swirl from the auto-dog and a nice paper cup of "bug-juice" in front of the TV blaring SITE-TV....."McGruff" was on beseeching us to "take a bite out of crime."
XO: "See here, Capn'? You do some guys a favor...drag 'em all the way down here from Norfolk...put up with 'em treatin' yer warship like its a luxury cruise....and then at the very end, you say, "Hey! how 'bout a lil help..just a hand....half-hour flight, nuttin' to it....whadya say...help us out?" But Nooooooo! 2 of 'em are already drunk, one is less than helpful and these 2 are in here watchin' cartoons!!! damn aviators")
Awight...I'm a reasonable man....So I'll try again:
here's how the orig. Jaguar part fails:

Here's how it will look if you replace it in time:

and the first pictures posted WERE actually on the 2005 MY, not the 2003, but it was a part obtained from Rock Auto for $62.99: Uro XR849446
(I did have to swap the old temp-sensor onto the Uro part...it came with one, but didn't match the wiring connector) See the telltale "make from" hose from this thread? https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...p-3-0l-126574/
(Just to confirm my memory, I popped the bonnet on the 05 and that's it)
And if you have 2 S-types for awhile...you collect some used parts that "May be useful for something later on.."

Hey Rick,
My usual Saturday morning fluids-and-pressures check revealed that my turret is moist (hey, wasn't that the name of a Joan Collins made-for-TV movie back in the 80s) so I'm sure glad I remembered your "Darn Turret" post from back in early May....
When you ordered your replacement OEM assembly off eBay, what individual pieces came with it? I've looked at your photo but it's difficult for me to tell. Some of those hoses don't look new....
I'm wondering if I can just replace what Jaguar calls the Thermostat Housing (AJ813558) and be good to go....
Any suggestions?

A bit more research revealed that I apparently cannot purchase just "the turret" coolant outlet pipe separately. Looks like I'll have to order the entire Radiator Hose Upper Assembly as Jaguar calls it (part no. XR854920). SNG Barratt and Welsh Enterprises both sell that assembly for about $80, but with the holiday weekend in full force they are both closed until Tuesday. I'll check with my local Jaguar dealership parts guy and see how much of a discount he is willing to grant me assuming they have it in stock....
My local Jaguar dealership no longer sells the Radiator Hose Upper Assembly (part no. XR854920). They break it down into three pieces, all of which are more than $100 each. I'll be much better off ordering from SNG Barratt or Welsh Enterprises....
I've looked on eBay and there are multiple sellers for the XR854920 assembly for less than $70 with free shipping. I wonder about the parts quality, though. I've read that some of these eBay auto parts are mediocre from a quality standpoint. And given the number of plastic parts in our cooling systems, we need as high a parts quality as we can get to minimize the risk of killing our engines....
Any opinions?

I don't believe you will be able to get a lower quality turret than the genuine part.
I recall someone Brutal? recommending reinforcing around the outside of the turret, probably with JB weld or similar.

Thanks, Norri. I went ahead and ordered the appropriate Radiator Hose Upper Assembly off eBay for $68 with free shipping. It should arrive by next Friday. I think I'll drive my Ram and leave my S-Type parked until then just to be safe....
Yes, Brutal did indeed recommend running an epoxy bead around the base of the new turret prior to installation. Don't know if it will actually make the turret hold up any better, but it sure can't hurt....
Not looking forward to having to jam my gorilla-sized hands into the tight spaces required for this job. Hope I can get in there and successfully complete it. Sure wish my small-handed former neighbor still lived up the street....

Would anyone actually bother to "knock off" this stuff?
Good Sunday morning humor for me guys ...
It will indeed be interesting to see if this hose assembly is "knocked off" or if it shows up with a genuine Jaguar parts label on the bag. We'll see....
In the meantime, can those of you who've already done this job pass along your tips and tricks to make it go a bit more smoothly? I'm really concerned about being able to get my monster hands into the tight spaces required for a successful outcome. I've been unable to find the procedure in my JTIS CD....

I've had that tool for a while and while it was very helpful, indispensable really, with my Suburban it was completely useless in most of the spots with MY Jag because of the orientation of everything and the lack of room ...
Perhaps having a bit more room on the V6 will help?
I replaced a lot of hoses and the DCCV this year and a varying size set of vice grips from very small to large helped out. I replaced the really difficult clamps with worm screw SS clamps so now it will be a breeze.
The main replacement hoses come with the spring clamps glued on and a removeable plastic clip so I thought well, well, well this is going to be a snap!
Not necessarily so though. In a couple of spots there wasn't enough room to pull them off in straight fashion so as I attempted to slip them off sideways they popped off alright but the clamp also shifted unacceptably - yeah just more work. Perhaps on the assembly line they're absolutely perfect?
Have some silicon grease on hand to make the assembly easier and make them removable in the future WO always breaking the plastic stuff. Napa has the bargain stuff but I prefer Dow Corning 111.
May your factory spring clamps be merciful and your plastic bits robust!
Grease up, grease up home garage warriors and advance!

You do need a bit of room to get them in, but I got them to work most places, long nosed vise grips work well too.
Jon I think they are just called hose clip pliers, you should find them in Sears, Autozone etc.

Jon, I just noticed you'd had cause to revisit this thread!
Norri's picture might well be the best use of $30 you can find this week, given what is pending when your parts arrive:
Probably also available at Hazard Fraught during this weekend's great 4-DAY SALE!!!
I've completed this fitment on both S-Types...in fact, I shouldn't be surprised if the 03 may not be due again, soon. Don't know if I was in pic-taking-mode back then, but I'll look around and see what I've got. You most assuredly want to remove the airbox. You'll have to approach each clamp with a bit of study and much fiddling, even with the flexible clamp pliers to get them fitted on...and your large mitts will also be less than helpful during that step.....
Good luck, and keep us posted how it goes
Here's the pics from my last radiator R&R, may be of some use:

Thanks for the feedback, Zane. While waiting on my new hose assembly to arrive (perhaps as soon as Wednesday they now say), I have indeed done some studying and prodding around underneath the hood. The airbox is definitely coming out, as is the air duct and the engine dust cover. With all of that out of the way, I may have a decent shot at this job even with my oversized hands. I'll check with the local Harbor Freight to see if they carry those funky-looking hose clamp pliers with the cable attachment. Still not quite sure how they work....
Don't make a special trip...since posting that thought I've searched their website and it appears to be one of the first tools I've been unable to find there...
Too late, Zane. Just got back from Harbor Freight and as you said, no dice on the cabled hose clamp pliers there. But I did pick up the skinniest pair of long-nose needle-nose pliers I've ever seen for less than two bucks. They are half the size of my trusty needle-nose pliers I've had for 30 years or so. Maybe they will get me into the tight spaces where I need to go on this job....
Stopped by Advance Auto Parts on the way home. They don't carry the cabled hose clamp pliers, either. Looks like I may have to do without....

Norri,
Thanks for the tutorial video. Now I understand....
But the business end of that tool still looks to be much too big and bulky to get into a couple of the tight spaces where I know I'll need to be going....

Guys,
I'd like to capture and re-use the coolant I must pump out of the system in order to replace this upper hose assembly. How much coolant do you think I'll need to pump out before the remaining coolant is below the level of the lowest hose I'll need to pull? A gallon? More than that?
Thanks for your feedback....

Jon, I don't remember the cooling system capacity, but I do recall totally draining it at the radiator draincock gets you barely more than half of total capacity. You'll find some is still trapped in the hose assy...probably more than enough to make a mess but not enough to prevent you from getting to near Min. On refill if you were at Max to start.
Unless you just recently renewed it, I'd take the opportunity to flush with distilled water and top up with your favorite coolant. I've converted everything to Zerex G-05 save the 07 F150 and the MF1010......and they'll get their turn.... no more horrid pink stain for me!
