Greetings,

Can somebody please guide me to an easily obtainable source of power steering fluid for my '02? The service manual simply calls out Dexron III. No problem, I thought, but I managed to stump an experienced counterman at my local parts store.

Do I just use straight Dexron III transmission fluid? Or should I find a power steering fluid that meets the Dexron III standard? There was a bewildering variety of power steering fluid on the shelf locally, but we couldn't find anything on any bottle verifying it met the Dexron III standard. And what of superseded standards? Does Dexron IV or V also cover III? My head was spinning after a few minutes.

I'd appreciate any tips, such as "Valvoline product #ABC123", etc. Preferably something I can find locally at most any parts store.

GM terminated all licensing for the production of Dexron III in 2006. The company advised GM vehicle owners that any other manufacturer's claims made of compatibility past 2006 without official GM endorsement would be inaccurate. GM informed the public that the only fluid compatible with Dexron III was the replacement Dexron VI. The automaker then authorized licensing of Dexron VI; GM publishes a list of companies and product names that comply with its specifications for the fluid...

 

Any of the later iterations of Dexron should work OK as a replacement for Dexron III; they are backwards compatible.

That said......

I'm not sure how critical this would be for use in a power steering system. All five of my 1995-older Jags have specified Dexron as power steering fluid and, truthfully, I've just used whatever bottle of ATF was easiest to reach at the moment. Nothing bad has happened.

But, my level of nonchalance in this regard might not be appropriate for a newer Jag.....nor comfortable to some owners.

What about this? I’ve got several quarts of NAPA premium ATF in the garage. The label says it’s applicable for Dexron III (in a transmission):
