The engine loses power and stalls
Hello everyone,
I own a Jaguar S-Type, model year 2002.5-2003, VIN M55376.
The car has a problem: in the warmer months, after a medium-long journey and when the engine rpm drops to idle (typically in traffic or when stopping at a stop sign or traffic light), the engine loses power and stalls. At that point, you have to wait a variable amount of time before the engine can restart, and then you have to maintain a high rpm (2000 or more) to prevent the problem from recurring.
I have a laptop with Legacy IDS Tools (official Jaguar diagnostic tools) installed, which I connected to the car via a Mongoose cable. After downloading and clearing the errors, I drove the car for a few days and redownloaded the errors. This is the list of errors:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Anti-lock braking system
C1277 Steering wheel angle 1 and 2 - circuit failure
-----------------------------------------------------------
Climate control module
B2426
B1263
B1242
B2796
B1262
-----------------------------------------------------------
Engine Control Module
P1000 System check not completed since last memory clear
P1582 Flight recorder data is stored
P0191 Fuel rail presssure sensor circuit range/performance
P0306 Cylinder 6 misfire detected
P0305 Cylinder 5 misfire detected
P0304 Cylinder 4 misfire detected
P0303 Cylinder 3 misfire detected
P0302 Cylinder 2 misfire detected
P0301 Cylinder 1 misfire detected
P0300 Random misfire detected
P1313 Misfire rate catalyst damage bank 1
P1647 Heated oxygen sensor control module, bank 2 open/shorted
P1316 Misfire rate excess emissions
-----------------------------------------------------------
Audio unit
U2603
-----------------------------------------------------------
Instrument pack
U2521
B1681
U1900
U2197
U2510

Does anyone have any suggestions as to the cause of this problem or what tests to run to determine it?
Thanks in advance for your kind support.

Ignoring the unrelated faults, I would suggest you check the fuel pressure first.
It’s misfiring on all cylinders, therefore it isn’t a faulty ignition coil.
The other faults indicate a problem with fuelling. I would say it is probably over-fuelling. Your next job is to find out why.
As one fault code was related to fuel pressure sensing, that seems the logical thing to check first.
The initial main suspects are:

- fuel pressure sensor faulty
- wiring to/from fuel pressure sensor faulty
- fuel pressure regulator faulty

What is the fuel pressure when the stalling event occurs?
With the ignition in the OFF position for 30 minutes or longer, use a voltmeter to determine the available voltage across the battery terminals. There should be a minimum of 12.6 volts shown on the voltmeter; if not, charge the battery for five hours at 2 to 5 amps and retest. If the voltmeter still indicates there is less than 12.6 volts, the battery is suspect and should be replaced. Many random DTCs and instrument cluster warnings are the result of a failing or weak battery.

First clear all codes and then see what comes back. With that laundry list of things I am sure a lot of them are just from past history and are not current codes.
With the age of the car I would install a new fuel pump and then see what happens. Fuel filter too.
