Default Engine Shudders

I have a 2000 Jag S type 4.0.

I have recently noticed that the engine shudders and hiccups when I go up a hill.

Also notice that sometimes when on idle waiting for the traffic light to change, it trembles.

Has anyone had these problems before or know what could be wrong?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Is the check engine light on? Are there any codes?

Default Engine shudders

Hi Mikey
No check engine lights or other warning lights come on.
The car oil is changed every 3K miles although I did go to a local mechanic the last 3 oil changes. They used synthetic blend oil which they say was better.
My car has 95,000 miles on it.

Did you check with an OBDII reader for any stored codes? Have the cam chain tensioners been upgraded to the latest standard?

BTW- your car does not need or benefit from 3K oil changes, or synthetic oil. You're wasting money. The factory recommended interval is 10K miles or annually, using standard oil.

Sounds like an air leak or misfires. Check OBD for pending codes a few times and of course check fuel trims.

Hi Mikey,
How do I check the OBDII codes myself? I know nothing about cars, but would be able to figure things out as I'm technically inclined. Do I need equipment? Or is this something I have to take to a mechanic?
Thanks

If you're not familiar with diagnostics and repair on moderns cars, best off finding a trusted local mechanic to at least read the codes for you. Give us the numbers they find (not the names on his reader display screen). It usually has the form of one letter and four digits.
