False neutral under acceleration (transmission flare)
Hi,
Any advice on this would be gratefully received....
Today, on an uphill section, I pressed the sport button and floored the accelerator to overtake a Sunday afternoon driver, when I suddenly lost drive. The engine revved freely and there was a thudding sound from the rear as if a type had blown. I coasted to the side of the road, selected reverse, which engaged then reselected drive which also engaged. The rest of the journey home went without incident, including several hard accelerations with sport selected. It felt like a false neutral. Has anyone else experienced this and if so what is it?
My car is a 2001 style 3.0 sport auto with 73k on the clock. I've just had the auto transmission fluid changed.
Cheers

Welcome to the forum. I've moved your post from the UK Regional section to the S-Type section, technical topics should be posted in the model-relevant sections.
What you experienced is commonly called a transmission flare, it happens as these transmissions get older, the fluid is well used and maybe the shifter is out of adjustment.

Cheers. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can fix this? Transmission fluid was changed shortly before this happened. OR should I chance it, bearing in mind that it's only happened once?
Depending on the condition of the fluid drained, it may be wise to replace the fluid once again within 1,000 km or 600 miles as it may still have some contamination.
When the gearbox was serviced, was the fluid level full? Was the filter renewed as part of the service and if so, was there any debris in the pan when it was removed?

Follow up on the fluid level. It's absolutely critical that it's correct.
So go back to whoever changed it and make sure it's full. It's not real easy. Do you know how it's done?
I would make sure you understand the procedure and then ask how the shop filled it.
I agree another refill/change would be good too but we did not see the old oil so it's hard to say?
