Faulty mileage display

Faulty mileage display
S-type v6 2001 ccx
Dash mileage Display went out... HELP!
I managed to open the dashboard,
when I fumble the wires the display goes on again! and out after a while...
The wiring goes into the major dash wiring loom harness...
do I need to change the whole wiring loom,
or does anybody know how to lay new wire bypass??
The dealer says it will cost 1000 euros, man its just a wire!

Dear NBCat, Thank you for the reply, and suggestion,
actually no wire has been checked.
I will purchase a multimeter and check all wires and connectors,
will get back some time next week with the results.
