Default Front Hub.....Where to buy?

Strange thing happened the other day. 3 wheel studs broke for no apparent reason. The tire has been on the car for thousands of miles so I don't think the wheel was installed improperly. No noise or vibration before it happened like it was loose or anything. They just broke and THEN there was a vibration!!

The car is a 2003 S-Type and I'm told I have to buy the front hub as the wheel studs are not available separately. My local dealer in Chattanooga wants $359.27 and Nalley in Atlanta wants $329.00 so it's not cheaper enough to offset the freight.

Anybody know another place to buy a front hub at a discount? Thanks in advance!

I found this Timkin part on Parts Geek.com. It's about $200 cheaper. Does it look correct? Anybody ever tried one of these?

Thanks.

I don't think Nalley will charge shipping on an order of that value.

You can change the studs, I beleive the Lincoln LS ones will fit.

Both Jaguar dealerships confirmed that the studs were not available. They said the only way is to replace the whole hub. (Nice huh?)

I have tried Lincoln LS parts before and they didn't fit. (window regulator) I may just buy the Timkin brand front hub for $111.00 and be done with it.

Your choice, did you take a look at the link? I seem to recall there being some problem with the hub offset on replacement hubs? Maybe it was Joycesjag who mentioned it.

Seems like it was SKF hubs that were the problem, you might want to be careful.

Call Coventry West (Atlanta, GA.) or Jaguar Heaven (CA.) for a low mileage used hub? Less $$

Hopefully the Timken part will be correct. I did not buy the SKF part. If it's wrong they have the OEM part for $277 ($80 cheaper than my local dealer) I'll let you know how it goes.

Hopefully the Timken fits. I use that brand on my Jeep since it is very hard on the unit bearing hubs due to the bigger tires - the Timkens tend to last much longer than the OEM or other aftermarket units.

You can change just the studs.

It's a horses and water thing.

Eds123, bfsgross, Norri,

Where would I buy FRONT wheel studs separately if the dealers do not stock them? From my experience when I had rear studs break, the studs are a Jaguar only item that regular auto parts stores do not carry.

Have any of the three of you ever actually replaced the front wheel studs on your S-Type? Where did you buy your studs? Part number?

Thanks.

OK. I ordered part# 610-484 from Rock Auto so if the new hub from Timkin doesn't fit I'll have a back up plan. Sounds like I may need a few spare wheel studs anyway after reading that thread. Good Lord I have never had a car that routinely broke wheel studs before. I'm not even using the junk stock lug nuts!! I have 18" chromw wheels and after market lug nuts so it isn't the 2 piece lug nuts causing the issue. But I've had 8 studs break so far................

That is pretty wild dude. Are these stock chrome wheels or aftermarket? If they are aftermarket, do they use/need hub centric spacers? If so do you have them? How high are your torque values on the studs - overstretching could be an issue.

Just some random thoughts - seems to be something more at play here....

I've replaced all my wheel studs. After the first one done the rest are easy. You ordered the correct part number as it is the same for F/R. The front is easier than the rears. Remove wheel, remove caliper, remove rotor, hammer studs loose, remove 4 bolts on back of hub and 1 plug, once removed finish removing studs and insert new ones, repeat process backwards. I bought some washers and cheap lug nuts to pull the stud through the hole.

Yes, the studs do suck. You can try to defend them saying they were torques wrong, etc. But, mine were rust welded to the lugs and broke off. My Porsche and former toyotas required torque spec that were never followed and I never had any problems. These are a definite weak link.

It was a Jersey car for the first part of it's life so I'm assuming it was from there. Never had any problems with a car from Florida so I hope the new studs stay this way!
