I have an 03 STR for three months now and still everyday I'm excited to drive her. A reasonably maintained STR is a very durable beastly machine. Trust me, in many respects you won't be disappointed by this vehicle. She'll ride real nice...even when kicking somethings ***.

It's a rare beast. You're only likely to buy one. Any car like that is an unquantifiable risk. You can be lucky or unlucky. Have a contingency fund, whatever car you buy.

if you look at my for sale ad, you will see that i have fixed most of the issues that are common on the 2003.

The uncommon one was the torque converter. Which is already done.

Or have a good warranty attached to it.

the diff sucks on these cars. I don't know why they'd spend so much on the tranny and engine and brakes and then toss a crappy diff in the rear end with all that power.

The heater hose under the supercharger is prone to leaking on the end that is toward the front of the motor. I guess there's an updated part on it. I just paid $1150 to have that fixed, so it's worth asking about that too. My car only has 39k on it, so it's not miles that wear out that hose.

Other than those things, I love the car.

What is big difference between 03 and a 05. Im looking to spending under $15000. Test drove and 03 yesterday with 20K miles, he wanted $26000 for it, that was a overpriced i feel.

The 2005 and up had a lot of changes but don't look that much different. The rear bumper and tail lights were changed and do not fit the earlier cars. The hood and grille were also mover/changed a bit. I have a 2005 and unless it's sitting next to an earlier car I can't really see anything different. Very subtle changes!! Also a the windshield washers were moved from the hood to the wiper blades.

S Types are great cars and the R is awesome, but as with any premium high-performance vehicle it needed to be well maintained. Check candidates out thoroughly, look at as many as you can and get the best car you can afford. Make sure you have the funds or skills to maintain it .
best wishes VMV
