Unhappy help please

I live in charlotte nc and i cant seem to get a straight answer about my car Im a 26 yr old lady might be why lol ok I brought a 00 s type 6 cyclinder from a nice lady it has only 85,500 miles on it everything seems to be fine The light came on i take it to get checked and its a misfire 2nd coil or cylinder thing I was told just blow it out it has been sitting for a while like a while and then i was told it might be a good idea to do a fuel treatment before paying 450 for a tune up i priced the parts and it a couple dollars shy of 100 for all parts and i asked for the best ones. I need help a mechanic or just advice please im scared to drive and have to be to work.

Firstly, welcome to the forum.

That was a marathon read, please put some punctuation at some point to stop the running over of subjests. Yep, I'm old, and sometimes these things annoy me.

My advice from way down here, and based on what I have had with our 2 S Types.

Your car is "right at" the mileage of needing spark plugs, so, no real surprises that I can see.

I used NGK brand spark plugs, and whatever ignition coils I can find at a fair price. Lots of info on coils in this forum. Many will suggest "Genuine Jaguar" only, I do not, as Jaguar did NOT make the OE coils, they were Ford, and made by some manufacturer somewhere in some factory, in some country. The original coils on both mine were noted as "Made in Japan",.

When I did the spark plugs on them, I replaced the 3 coils on each car that are under the inlet manifold, as this simply made sense, and both cars did had a misfire (intermitant) on the RH side, which I felt by holding my hand over the exhaust pipe and feeling the "puff". Very old school diagnosis, but works for me.

The 3 coils on the LH side are EASY to get at, and can be done later if needed.

A simple, "Pour in the tank" fuel injector cleaner will do NO harm, and can be done by you in about 10 seconds. The products vary, and our market is way different to yours, so I will NOT mention brands, but down here they are about $15 per bottle that treats 80ltrs.

I would change the fuel filter, it also is due now.

The air filter element renew would be a top idea.

The CORRECT oil is mandatory in these engines for correct running, and too many dont get it, and then VVT units fail, etc etc. I run 5W/30 FULL Synthetic in both ours all year round.

I also agree with a good long hardish run, which will certainly do NO harm. These cars are built to DRIVE, and that is paramount in my opinion.

These are very reliable cars, and with some proper servicing, will last a very long time. Simply throwing parts etc at it will not always sort it, so take your time, and do one thing at a time. Get the service that is required at the mileage and time first, then move slowly through the other items that may be needed.

I reckon with new plugs and coils, and filters etc will sort the car well.

Hello Quannie welcome to the forum.


With your Model Year (MY) there are quite a few possibilities that your problem could be. It could be caused by a vacuum leak, faulty coil, leaky valve cover gasket, spark plugs (as mentioned) the list could go on.


It would be best if you ran the vehicle over to Auto Zone, PEP Boys etc. for a free scan, then come back here and post the exact codes. If you listen to inexperienced mechanics when it comes to these matters, the cost can become more than the vehicle is worth.

Not much to add to what Grant and Rick have already posted, because...well. they've covered it all!

One thing: If you get the codes read, get the actual codes from whoever reads it for you to post back here...not what they tell you the codes mean....should be "P" folowed by some numbers

Thank you so much. Sorry I wasn't thinking I don't want to scare off good advice with bad punctuation lol, but thanks for your help I panic fast so this helps alot. I also researched alot about this car. Well what it would need to maintain it so i decided to use Castrol edge full synthetic and wivi filter they said that was the best.

I took it to Oreillys he said it was the 2nd coil or cylinder thing cant remember the exact name sadly.

You asked for help so help us help you before you start throwing away YOUR hard earned money. There are many very experienced guys here with what sometimes I believe more knowledge about these S Types than most dealer techs, no offense meant at any techs on the forum!

I'm agreeing with everything I've seen here as suggestions. The car is close to where "100,000 mile service" is required - and the fuel filter, air filter and spark plugs need to go. That misfire you're experiencing may be due to a plug that has worn, and the gap is too wide to fire consistently (or at all). So, it may not even be the coil on plug (COP). This level of service needs to be done anyway, and your fix might not be anything out of the ordinary, nor ridiculously expensive. Every vehicle I've ever owned needed new plugs at some point in time, and when removed, the evidence was clear. It was just normal wear! In one case, it was a miracle the plug fired at all (double the recommended gap). Don't go for some miracle spark plugs - OEM replacements are the way to go (you can do more damage as in some Ford trucks if you use Platinum plugs, because they run hotter than stock).
Then, enjoy the ride!

HA.

I dont scare easy. I survived 2 teenage kids, 1M, 1F, and I am still here. The F was by far the worst, but she still got her Jag, so Dad is pleased.

These cars can be daunting, but as I said, take your time, dont panic, EVER, keep your sense of humour (mandatory), and some of us drink, but that is selective. I blame all the V12's I owned for that little illness.

We dont get ice, so take care.
